This page explains the license templates used on the wiki and when to use them. Every uploaded file should include at least one license template to identify its copyright status and categorize it appropriately.

If you are unsure which license applies, use {{tl|Unknown license}} until the file can be reviewed.

== Guidelines ==
Use copyrighted material only when permitted or when it qualifies as [[wikipedia:Fair use|fair use]]. Whenever possible, upload your own original work instead of copyrighted material.

When possible, prefer screenshots over raw game assets. For example, to illustrate a texture, use a screenshot of it in-game or in Hammer instead of uploading the texture file itself.

Any media uploaded to the wiki should solely be for use on this site.

=== Third-party content ===
Copyrighted material created by someone other than Valve should only be uploaded if it qualifies as fair use or the copyright holder has given permission. Examples include:
* Screenshots of third-party software used in tutorials (such as Adobe Photoshop).
* Logos, promotional images, or screenshots for games and mods documented on this wiki.
* Fan-made maps used to illustrate game mechanics, puzzles, or other relevant topics.
* Media that the creator has explicitly permitted to be used on this wiki or in tutorials.

=== Unacceptable content ===
* Diagrams, charts, or other illustrations taken from another website.
* Logos, screenshots, or other copyrighted media that are unrelated to the article or tutorial.
* Copyrighted material that is only loosely related to the subject, such as a [[wikipedia:Penny Arcade (webcomic)|Penny Arcade]] comic used to illustrate ''Deadlock''.
