Guidelines
It is important to use copyrighted material with care to avoid potential legal situations. Many instances of image use within the scope of this Wiki will qualify as fair use, but use your own creation instead of a copyrighted image whenever possible.
Use copyrighted material only when permitted or when it qualifies as fair use. Whenever possible, upload your own original work instead of copyrighted material.
* Screenshots of copyrighted material created by Valve are acceptable. This includes in-game screenshots, images of game content such as models and effects, and screenshots of developer tools such as Hammer Editor. Do not post original texture files; to show a texture, take a screenshot of it in use in-game or in Hammer.
* If the image uses copyrighted content which is not created by Valve, you should be careful it will qualify as fair use when used on the wiki. Examples of fair use:
** A screenshot of third-party development content used in a tutorial (such as creation of a texture in Adobe Photoshop)
** Logos and promotional images/screenshots for games and mods which have pages on this Wiki
** Fanmade maps for illustration of a game concept or puzzle
** Anything where the creator has given permission for the image to be used in tutorials or other resources or posted on this Wiki.

Unacceptable use of copyrighted material
When possible, prefer screenshots over raw game assets. For example, to illustrate a texture, use a screenshot of it in-game or in Hammer instead of uploading the texture file itself.
Examples of unacceptable images. This list is not comprehensive and common sense should be used.
* A diagram or flowchart of game development which was found on another website and/or is probably copyrighted
* Logos or screenshots of copyrighted material which are not used to illustrate article subjects or tutorials, such as the logo of your favorite clothing company
* Copyrighted content that is only vaguely related to the article subject, such as a Penny Arcade comic about Deadlock

Third-party content
Copyrighted material created by someone other than Valve should only be uploaded if it qualifies as fair use or the copyright holder has given permission. Examples include:
* Screenshots of third-party software used in tutorials (such as Adobe Photoshop).
* Logos, promotional images, or screenshots for games and mods documented on this wiki.
* Fan-made maps used to illustrate game mechanics, puzzles, or other relevant topics.
* Media that the creator has explicitly permitted to be used on this wiki or in tutorials.

Unacceptable content
* Diagrams, charts, or other illustrations taken from another website.
* Logos, screenshots, or other copyrighted media that are unrelated to the article or tutorial.
* Copyrighted material that is only loosely related to the subject, such as a Penny Arcade comic used to illustrate Deadlock.

This page explains the guidelines for uploading files, the license templates used on the wiki, and when to use them. Every uploaded file should include at least one license template to identify its status and to ensure it is automatically placed in the correct maintenance category.

Guidelines

[edit | edit source]

Use copyrighted material only when permitted or when it qualifies as fair use. Whenever possible, upload your own original work instead of copyrighted material.

When possible, prefer screenshots over raw game assets. For example, to illustrate a texture, use a screenshot of it in-game or in Hammer instead of uploading the texture file itself.

Any media uploaded to the wiki should solely be for use on this site.

Third-party content

[edit | edit source]

Copyrighted material created by someone other than Valve should only be uploaded if it qualifies as fair use or the copyright holder has given permission. Examples include:

 • Screenshots of third-party software used in tutorials (such as Adobe Photoshop).
 • Logos, promotional images, or screenshots for games and mods documented on this wiki.
 • Fan-made maps used to illustrate game mechanics, puzzles, or other relevant topics.
 • Media that the creator has explicitly permitted to be used on this wiki or in tutorials.

Unacceptable content

[edit | edit source]
 • Diagrams, charts, or other illustrations taken from another website.
 • Logos, screenshots, or other copyrighted media that are unrelated to the article or tutorial.
 • Copyrighted material that is only loosely related to the subject, such as a Penny Arcade comic used to illustrate Deadlock.
