Maximilian FairfaxGive feedback
Maximilian Fairfax is the CEO of Fairfax Industries, and the father of Pocket.

“- You are a man with powerful enemies.
- I have enemies. "Powerful" is a bit generous.
— Lady Geist and Maximilian Fairfax
Background
editMaximilian Fairfax is depicted as a white middle-aged bald man with a brown beard. He has a large, muscular build, and is seen wearing a gray suit.[1]
It's implied that Maximilian was the person who ordered Pocket's assassination. Pocket firmly believes that Maximilian was behind it,[2] and Calico, the assassin who was hired to kill Pocket,[3][4] mentions that Maximilian "will have questions" when she kills Pocket in-game.[5] Why Maximilian would've ordered the assassination is unknown, although he seems to be after Pocket's magic suitcase.[6][7]
In The Binding of Oathkeeper, Maximilian knows that Pocket survived and asks Lady Geist if she knew where they were. Maximilian mentions that, like Lady Geist, he also originally thought Pocket had died, and seems to consider their survival to be "tomorrow's problem".[8] During the Winter season, Maximilian donated "a small fortune" to New York orphanages, telling the New York Oracle that "no one should be without family on the holidays".[9]
Pocket and Maximilian's relationship is strained. Pocket is ashamed of their family name,[10] and believes Maximilian is not a good man.[11] Pocket wants to stop their father rather than kill him, although Pocket believes that Maximilian would rather Pocket try to kill him.[12] Pocket also worries that, by killing people in the ritual, they're turning more and more like their father.[13][14] While trapped in the Baroness Hotel, The Doorman taunts Pocket over their relationship with their parents.[15][16]
Maximilian's relationship with Pocket's mother is unknown, although Pocket believes Vyper makes them "look stable" in comparison.[17] Maximilian also has at least two children as Pocket is called the eldest heir to Fairfax Industries,[18] although there has been no more information about the other heirs.
As the CEO of Fairfax Industries, Maximilian hand-picked McGinnis for the company after she designed a machine that refined the souls of the dead at 15 years old.[19][20] Maximilian "paraded McGinnis incessantly" to the New York elite when he first discovered her as a genius teenage inventor.[21] McGinnis generally doesn't care about the sins of Fairfax Industries or Maximilian due to how much she gets paid.[22][23] Despite her apathy, she finds "assholes with god complexes" to be a pretty close description of Maximilian.[24]
Maximilian was responsible for the island of Cadenza becoming the 50th state of the US, with Fairfax Industries originally having sovereignty of the island. According to McGinnis, Fairfax was "surprisingly calm" during the event in which Fairfax Industries lost sovereignty of Cadenza, as she believed he knew legislation would catch up to him eventually.[25] McGinnis and Haze also note that Maximilian cares more about legacy than he does money.[26]
Maximilian is an old acquaintance of Professor Dynamo, who is Pocket's godfather.[27] They used to be friends, although in the current day Dynamo believes Maximilian just has "warm nostalgia" for him.[28] Dynamo considers Maximilian to be a "complicated man" as opposed to a bad man.[11]
Paradox claims to have blackmail on Fairfax, which is planned to be exhibited in the Paradox Museum.[29]
One possible ending for The Binding of Oathkeeper has Lady Geist transferring Oathkeeper to Maximilian. Maximilian wants to "change the world" with Oathkeeper's help.[1]
The Binding of Oathkeeper
editMaximilian makes an appearance in Lady Geist's visual novel, The Binding of Oathkeeper.
Note: The Binding of Oathkeeper is currently inaccessible to the main game, instead being something planned for release in the future. As such, everything in the current visual novel is prone to change, as it is still undergoing development.
Lady Geist seeks somebody to pawn Oathkeeper off on due to her failing ward. After a discussion with her grandson on who to give Oathkeeper to, Johann Geist Jr. suggests giving Oathkeeper to Maximilian Fairfax, to which Lady Geist notes that he'd likely bind or weaponize Oathkeeper.
In Storyline C, Lady Geist decides to pursue the idea of giving Oathkeeper to Fairfax, and proceeds to meet him at his office. After a stiff greeting where Maximilian asks Lady Geist if she knew where Pocket was, the two begin discussing why Lady Geist is there.
The visual novel showcases some of Maximilian's characteristics. When Lady Geist asks if Maximilian will offer her a drink, he tells her to help herself since he's not here to serve her. When Lady Geist tells Maximilian that he is a man with powerful enemies, he responds by telling her that he has enemies, yet describing them as "powerful" would be generous. Maximilian tells Lady Geist that nobody contacts him unless they want something from him, to which Lady Geist retorts that he doesn't return calls if he thinks they're going to waste his time.
Lady Geist wants Maximilian to take Oathkeeper as she's "tired of bearing his weight", and believes an entity as powerful as Oathkeeper needs a strong hand to guide it. She offers Oathkeeper to Maximilian in exchange for guarantees for her foundations and her safety. Maximilian agrees to the terms, and arranges a notary to make a blood contract to seal their deal. Three days later, the deal is complete and the blood contract is signed, as Oathkeeper is transferred from Lady Geist to Maximilian.
Storyline C ends with Maximilian asking Oathkeeper if he's ready to change the world.
