In Deadlock, there are two opposing teams in the game, each consisting of 6 players. Each team serves either the Archmother or the Hidden King who seek to use the players to complete a ritual and fully realize their existence into the physical world.
In Standard, Street Brawl, and Bot matches, players cannot choose the team they fight for, as this is decided at the start of every match by the matchmaking engine. Between the two teams, each player will be playing a unique hero. On the contrary, Custom Matches will allow players to choose their own respective team and hero where they are not restricted to only having one of a specific hero in either team.
In-game
During a game, a player works with their team to take down objectives and ultimately destroy the enemy Patron, while defending their own. Each team will be accompanied with a Guardian, a Walker, and a pair of Base Guardians for each lane.
Players can identify the team they are in from the voice of their Patron and the surrounding design of their team's side of the map.
The Archmother has a feminine voice, in which its base is topped with multiple Owl Statues and is named 'Grand Central'. Its team covers the 'Uptown' side of the map which is characterized by its mostly white buildings, and featuring an Aggressive Bull Statue beside the base to the right.
Meanwhile, The Hidden King has a masculine voice and its base is named Penn Station. Its team covers the 'Downtown' side of the map which instead is characterized by its mostly red buildings, and its Defensive Bear and Horned Gargoyle statue beside on the right and on top the base, respectively.
During a game, the player will view their friendly Patron and Troopers to be in light-greenish blue, while the enemy Patron and Troopers are in red.
Heroes
- Main article: Heroes
Before players can join a game, they are required to pick at least three heroes. When new heroes are introduced in a patch, players must include at least two non-new characters in their roster. A Standard and Bot Match will have 12 different unique heroes between the two teams while a Street Brawl will only have 8 unique heroes between the two teams. Custom Matches may involve multiple of the same heroes within or between the teams, or with lesser than 12 players in total.
