Sparkz9502: Making page a little clearer

Charges are stored uses of Hero abilities. When an ability with charges is used, a single charge is consumed. When an ability runs out of charges, it cannot be used again until the next charge is ready.

An ability with charges is displayed with a smaller bar above it. The bar's segments represent the number of charges. A white segment represents a usable charge, a purple partially-filled segment represents a charge that is being restored, and a grey segment represents a fully expended charge.

After using a charge there is a cooldown preventing immediate use of another charge. This cooldown varies by ability and is not affected by cooldown reduction, but is affected by items with a Faster Time Between Charges effect, such as Rapid Recharge.

Restoring Charges
As long as an ability does not have its maximum number of charges, it will passively restore charges over time. An ability's cooldown represents the length of time it takes to restore a single charge.

Charges are restored one at a time, not all at once.

Some abilities do not replenish with time and instead use other conditions to gain a charge. For example Wraith's Card Trick gains a charge when she deals damage to enemies.

Maximum Charges
Abilities with charges can store up to a maximum number of them. Each ability has its own default maximum amount.

Some abilities have upgrades that can increase the number of maximum charges they have. Additionally, specific items can be purchased which grant additional Bonus Ability Charges.

Bonus Ability Charges grant charged abilities with additional uses before needing to wait for their cooldown, and are gained from items purchased in the shop.

Bonus ability charges cannot be added to abilities that do not already use charges.
Charged Abilities
Here are all abilities that use Charge mechanic. Some of the abilities do not start out as charged but gain charges and relevant interactions when they get a specific upgrade.

charges

Notes
* Echo Shard, when imbued on a charged ability, will only restore a single charge. However, Refresher will restore all charges.
* Both Echo Shard and Refresher additionally reset the cooldown between uses of the ability.
Venator is a Hero in Deadlock. He doesn't walk the righteous path, he blazes the trail so that others may do so safely. His biggest challenge is knowing which weapon to use first. Firing a Consecrating Grenade into the fray softens up his enemies and keeps them from restoring health, and his Hex-Lined Snap Trap scatters across the ground to lock them in place. A Gutshot from his shotgun will knock back enemies who get too close, and when the time is right, Ira Domini will rid the world of evil once and for all.

A relentless monster hunter, Father Quinn Rourke represents the righteous wrath and fury of the Venators of Saint Benedict. Sent by his superiors at the Vatican, the Venator has been designated a mission: to annihilate the evil stirring in New York.

Venator was released on February 5, 2026 as the fourth winner of the Old Gods, New Blood update contest.
Trivia
* "Venator" means "hunter" in Latin.
* His ultimate ability, "Ira Domini", translates to "Wrath of the Lord" in Latin.
* Venator's weapon is named after the Bible passage Jeremiah 51:20: "Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms".
** Originally (before the July 28th update), Venator's weapon's fall-off range was 20m-51m, which also referenced this.
* Venator's selection voice line "Ours is not to question what is necessary. Ours is to have the will to do whatever it takes" is likely a reference to Alfred Tennyson's poem The Charge of the Light Brigade: "Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die".
* One of Venator's voice lines for upgrading Gutshot, "I long for the day when this will be a plowshare" references the phase "beating swords into plowshares" which comes from the Bible passage Isaiah 2:4.
* Venator was one of the heroes in a private build who was accidently leaked on stream in May 2025. A playable version of Venator was added to the files in the Shop Rework Update. A new Venator portrait was leaked in a work-in-progress hero select screen posted on 4chan in July 2025. On 20th January 2026, Venator was teased in the Hideout with a thurible on a bookshelf.
* Before his release, Venator had voice lines calling him by his last name "Rourke", indicating it may have been his hero name at some point in development.
** The Doorman has voice lines calling Venator "Cain", indicating it may have been his first name before "Quinn".
* Venator originally had the Shopkeeper voice actor as a temp VO, who made self-aware jokes about his role. The female temp voice (currently on Boho) called him "the bodega guy".
* Prior to the Six New Heroes Update, Venator had an ability called "Potent Vapors", a channel which would heal Venator and grant him movement slow resist at the cost of him being unable to attack throughout its channel. This ability was replaced with Consecrating Grenade.
** Additionally, prior to the Old Gods, New Blood update, Venator used to have an ability called "Penace and Retribution", a passive that would grant Venator stacking bullet and spirit resistances as he took sustained damage. This ability was replaced with Hex-Lined Snap Trap.
* "Blessing Ammunition in the Hideout" is displayed as one's status in the in-game Friends List when playing as Venator in the Hideout.
* Venator had the largest winning margin in the Old Gods, New Blood hero contest, winning by an 11% difference over Celeste.
* Venator's weapon is a submachine gun similar to a Heckler & Koch MP5, with its under-barrel grenade launcher decorated to resemble a Votive candle, and Rosary beads in place of a sling harness.
** The Submachine Gun in Valve's Half-Life is also based on an MP5 with an under-barrel grenade launcher.

Sparkz9502: Adding previously unstated exceptions to Damage Reduction

Damage Amplification or Damage Amp is a stat that multiplies the damage caused by the player to affected enemies and NPCs. It can be both positive and negative. In latter case it reduces damage and is also known as Damage Reduction.

Calculation
Contrary to what the percentages might suggest, multiple sources of damage amplification do not all stack in the same way. There are three distinct categories of Damage Amplification, each interacting with the damage formula differently:

* Additive Amps: These add together with each other (including additive Damage Reductions) into a single pool.
* Multiplicative Amps: These multiply the total damage one by one.
* Instance Amps: These are nearly identical to multiplicative amps, main exception being they create a new instance of damage.

The Damage Formula
Based on testing, the generalized formula for how these amps apply to weapon damage is as follows:

<math>\text{Damage} = [(\text{Base Bullet Damage} \times \text{Weapon Multiplier}) \times (1 + \text{Total Additive Amps}) + \text{Flat Bonus}] \times \text{Multiplicative Amp}_1 \times \text{Multiplicative Amp}_2 \dots \times \text{Instance Amp Damage}_1 \times \text{Instance Amp Damage}_2</math>

Example:

# A hero has a base bullet damage of 100 and 0 flat weapon damage for simplicity.
# The hero is affected by Inhibitor (an Additive Damage Reduction of -30%). Their damage drops to 70 (100 * 0.70 = 70).
# Ivy casts Air Drop on the hero (an Additive Amp of +20%). The additive pool is now -30% + 20% = -10%. The hero deals 90 damage (100 * 0.90 = 90).
# The hero parries an enemy hero (Multiplicative Amp of +25% against parried target). This is applied after the additive pool. The hero now deals 112.5 damage (90 * 1.25 = 112.5).

Damage Reduction
Damage Reduction is a negative form of Damage Amplification, reducing the damage output of enemies or its user. Mechanically, standard Damage Reductions are treated as negative Additive Amps (see Calculation section).

Damage Reduction Stacking
Valve's May 22 patch notes state that Damage Reduction debuffs are intended to stack diminishingly (i.e., multiplicatively, in the same manner as Resistance).

However, live testing confirms that standard Damage Reduction debuffs have not been fully migrated to this new system. Currently, Damage Reductions (such as Inhibitor or Fire Scarabs) simply act as negative Additive Amps. This means they add directly together with other additive amps (positive or negative) rather than multiplying against each other.

Sources of Damage Reduction
Damage Reduction

* Cheat Death, Golden Goose Egg and Cursed Relic reduce damage dealt by its user.

Spirit Damage Reduction
Spirit Damage Reduction from Infernus's Afterburn (T2) and Silencer does not behave like standard Damage Reduction. Multiple sources of Spirit‑specific reduction stack additively with each other (e.g., Afterburn T2 + Silencer = sum of percentages). This combined spirit reduction is then applied as a separate multiplier, multiplicative with all other additive amps such as Inhibitor.
|}

Bugs, Quirks, and Exceptions
* Additive Amps do not apply to many flat values, such as flat weapon damage bonuses, base damage for Melee abilities (Such as the bonus +60 damage from Calico's Leaping Slash T3 upgrade), Capacitor active, Backstabber, etc.
* Headhunter: Multiplicative non-instance amps are the only amps that work correctly with Headhunter damage.
* Return Fire: Because Multiplicative Amps act as defensive stats on the target, if an attacker fires at a target with Return Fire while the attacker has an M-amp active against them, the attacker will take increased reflected damage.
* Billy's Blasted bullet amp is unique as it is a post-mitigation true damage amp. Because of this, it does not work at all against barriers.
* Silencer and Infernus's Afterburn Tier 2 Spirit Damage Reduction are exceptions to the standard Damage Reduction rule. They stack additively with themselves, but multiplicatively with other additive amps.
* Celeste's Spirit damage amp from Radiant Daggers works like a multiplicative amp but is affected by additive amp bugs (see the Additive Amps entry above).
* Unstoppable: Suppresses all sources of Damage Reduction while active, but only for Spirit Damage.
* Some abilities, such as Gutshot, are not impacted at all by Damage Reduction. More testing is needed to identify and confirm every exception.

Buildup Per Shot
The item has a different buildup per shot depending on which hero purchased the item. The status only triggers once a buildup reaches 100% on an enemy player, and the buildup decays back to 0 if an enemy hasn't been shot for some time. Melee attacks count as 1 shot.

Once Silenced, subsequent shots have no effect until the victim's immunity expires.

Silver is a Hero in Deadlock, making her living tracking down lowlifes, but today New York’s misanthrope lycanthrope plans on summoning a god. Fortunately, her career as a bounty hunter has prepared her well for all that the ritual requires. She makes quick work of adversaries by catching them with her Entangling Bola, Boot Kicking them in the face, and finishing them off with a Slam Fire from her rifle. But inevitably, the Lycan Curse comes calling whether she likes it or not, and her foes will regret being too close when it does.

Lilah Silver has been a werewolf for as long as she can remember, insisting that she has her Lycanthropy under control. Despite her successes as a bounty hunter, Silver struggles with alcohol, smoking, financial, and personal troubles on a daily basis, driving her to seek the Patron's help to "thrive".

Silver is unique among heroes in having two distinct sets of abilities—one for her human form and one for her werewolf form—which automatically swap when her Lycan Curse transforms her.
<br>

Loose Muzzle deals damage in a close range, cone-shaped attack that can hit multiple enemies. The 7 meter falloff range cannot be increased by items such as Sharpshooter. It has no ammo count and no reload, and does not deal headshot damage.

It can activate Weapon item effects such as Ricochet. Split Shot has no effect on Loose Muzzle.

*This attack stacks Fire Rate from each confirmed hit on enemies and NPCs. The amount of fire rate gained per hit is found by dividing the Lycan Curse maximum Fire Rate by 16. The fire rate buff lasts approximately 6 seconds before resetting if no damage has been dealt with Loose Muzzle, and does not transfer to Silver when Lycan Curse ends.
* The passive feature has a 3 second delay before automatically casting Lycan Curse once bloodlust is full. The player can press the ability button to transform instantly during that delay.
* Werewolf Silver's Loose Muzzle attack deals Weapon Damage (see "Weapon/Transformed" above for more info).
** She can still do Melee Attacks, but it can be hard to tell when Werewolf Silver uses light melee since it has a similar animation to her base attack.
* Damage dealt to NPCs does not count towards Lycan Curse. However, it does generate the % passive buildup in combat.
* After Lycan Curse ends, Silver's weapon is automatically reloaded.
* Lycan Curse's cooldown does not begin until the transformation ends.
* Bonus fire rate is applied through stacks given when "shooting" (attacking) enemies. The max bonus listed on ability card is given at the maximum of Lycan Curse stacks. Each attack applies a new stack and refreshes the duration of all previous stacks to Lycan Curses. As an example, the base ability lists +Lycan Curse% Fire Rate; this means that every attack gives a +% Fire Rate bonus.
* Buildup notes:
** Lycan Curse bloodlust builds % per damage dealt (post-mitigation by resistances).
** Whenever Silver is below % health, the bloodlust buildup is increased by +%. This additional buildup grows by +% per Boon (additively), making it +% at max level. This bonus is applied retroactively to the existing buildup when Silver reaches the health threshold.
** The base required amount of hero-damage inflicted (not counting low health bonus) to charge Lycan Curse is . The damage required increases by +% per Boon (additively), making it at level 7 when the ultimate is unlocked, and at max level.
** Bloodlust also passively builds up % per second in combat, effectively lowering the damage required.
*** Bloodlust is lost at the rate of % per second when out of combat.
Trivia
* During development, Silver was originally codenamed Shapeshifter, whose name was leaked in November 2025.
* Silver had a scrapped ability where she tracked bounties during the match, as indicated by unused voicelines still in the files.
* The name of Silver's weapon, Hair of the Dog, is a shortening of the expression Hair of the Dog that Bit You, referring to alcohol consumed to lessen the effect of a hangover.
* Silver is the first hero to possess a weapon without a traditional projectile or ranged option, as her primary fire in Werewolf form swings her claws to maim enemies in melee range. She's also the first hero to have two sets of abilities.
* "Figuring Out What Happened Last Night in the Hideout" is displayed as one's status in the in-game Friends List when playing as Silver in the Hideout.
* Silver's name is an ironic reference to the fact that silver is a common weakness to werewolves. The Patrons' heralds tell the player to find silver bullets to stop an enemy Silver.
** It's also a common component-word primarily to describe appearance of non-human specimen (e.g. "silver back", "silver fang", etc.).
* Silver's release date, February 2, 2026, was under a full moon, a common association with werewolves.
* Silver's hairstyle is known as a Wolf Cut, originally known as a Shag.
* Silver's name typography has the shape of a crescent moon in the "R" curve.
* Silver has an ingrown right incisor on the Lycan model.

Hero Specific Effects
The following Status Effects are either exclusively relevant to or only applied by a specific Hero.

Affliction
A negative status effect applied by Pocket's Affliction ability. It deals constant damage over time for a long duration, however it is non-lethal and cannot reduce a target's health below 1. It also does not apply item procs.

Eternal Night
Fixation
Hotel Guest
Lethal Venom
A negative status effect applied exclusively by Vyper's ability of the same name. After a short delay, it deals Spirit Damage to the target. The max damage depends on the target's missing health.

Malice
A negative status effect applied exclusively by Lady Geist's ability of the same name. It inflicts a decaying Movement Slow on the target and increases the amount of damage Lady Geist deals to them. It can be stacked up to 5 times and refreshed.

Petrified
A negative status effect applied by Vyper's Petrifying Bola. Inflicted heroes are interrupted, unable to move and perform actions, but block all incoming damage, with the exception of Vyper's Lethal Venom (both the buildup and damage).

Rabbit Hex
A negative status effect applied by Sinclair's ability of the same name. Inflicted heroes change shape into a rabbit, with its corresponding hitbox, and move faster but have amplified received damage. The hero cannot perform any actions and abilities in rabbit form besides walking and jumping, but any actions and abilities initiated before the transformation are not interrupted.

Tether
A negative status effect applied by Vindicta's Stake ability. It binds all nearby targets to a central point, forcing them to stay within a short radius of the center.
Wrecked
Countering Debuffs
Certain abilities and items can be used to mitigate or remove negative status effects.

Temporary Buffs
These effects grant a short-term immunity to certain debuffs. For a full list of sources, see the main entry for each buff.
* Invincibility: Grants temporary immunity to all damage and hostile effects.
* Unstoppable: Grants temporary immunity to crowd control effects.
* Indomitable: Grants immunity to a single crowd control effect.

Debuff Resistance (Stat)
The following effects grant a Debuff Resistance stat, which reduces the duration of debuffs. Except for Willpower, this is a character stat, not a temporary buff.
Notes
* Inhibitor's Damage Reduction effect does not apply to enemy players with Unstoppable activated if they dealt Spirit Damage. However, the effect does still apply to Weapon Damage, including Melee Damage. The Healing Reduction will always apply.
* There are exceptions where Inhibitor does not apply, such as Gutshot's base and wall hit damage and the base damage of Ira Domini (it does reduce the Pure Damage). More testing is needed to determine how many exceptions there are.

Buildup Per Shot
The item has a different buildup per shot depending on which hero purchased the item. The status only triggers once a buildup reaches 100% on an enemy player, and the buildup decays back to 0 if an enemy hasn't been shot for some time. Melee attacks count as 1 shot.

Once Inhibited, subsequent shots refresh the duration of the effect.
Infernus is a Hero in Deadlock. He is an Ixian with a powerful control of flame that he uses to enhance his speed and ignite his enemies. Any targets left standing will be subject to his explosive Concussive Combustion, knocking them out and leaving them vulnerable to further immolation.

As a second-generation immigrant from Ixia, Infernus had a troubled and intense youth while he was raised in New York. Despite a rash of organized crime as a teenager, he found himself tending a bar in his adulthood and learning to calm his intense emotions. With quality music and interesting people to talk to, Infernus rarely has a need these days to call up his dangerous supernatural abilities.
Mirage is a Hero in Deadlock. He is agile and uses powerful wind-based abilities for disruption. By throwing out Fire Scarabs and transforming into a Dust Devil, Mirage can damage, lift up, steal life and elude his targets while applying Djinn's Mark to enemies to enhance his attacks. When the time is right, he can Travel across the map in an instant to assist his allies, hunt down weak foes and take care of objectives.

As an emissary of the Djinn ambassador Nashala Dion, Mirage is a diplomatic bodyguard who is charged with protecting the Djinn while supporting their mission to acquire the state of Wyoming.

Mirage was released on September 26, 2024.
This has been acknowledged by developer Kaori, who joked that Mirage's voice actor Fareed Ward could be easily identified by his screams, and referenced in voice lines by Mina, Silver and Vyper.
* Nashala has an unused human-sized model in the game files.
* Mirage's model was updated in the 2024-12-06 Update.
* Mirage carries Nashala in the bottle in his hand. In his previous model, it used to be attached to his chest.
* Mirage's first official model wasn't shipped in the game files until he was officially released. However, the model was leaked a couple weeks earlier by an updated portrait art.
* Mirage's pre-release model was based on Paradox's model with a modified McGinnis head.
* "Dreaming of Wyoming in the Hideout" is displayed as one's status in the in-game Friends List when playing as Mirage in the Hideout.
* Inhibitor's Damage Reduction Debuff effect does not apply to enemy players with Unstoppable activated if they dealt Spirit Damage.

Unstoppable's active ability dispels any active Stun, Silence, Sleep, Root, and Disarm.

Notes
* Unstoppable is not usable when the player loses control of their character, such as when asleep or stunned. Instead, it should be used in anticipation of these abilities to prevent them from working.
* Most non-movement Status Effects, such as resistance reduction or Healing Reduction are not suppressed. Unstoppable does suppress Damage Reduction (Inhibitor, Fire Scarabs, etc) if the damage dealt is Spirit Damage. However, it will not prevent reduction of Weapon Damage, including Melee Damage.
* Channelled abilities such as Dynamo's Singularity will affect the hero if Unstoppable's active ends while the ability is still ongoing.
* Unstoppable's active prevents players from being stunned after being parried.
* If an ability does damage and applies a negative effect, Unstoppable only prevents the effect but does not block the damage.
* Unstoppable's active effect also grants the user immunity to the Interrupt status effect.
* Unstoppable is not removed by Cursed Relic and blocks all of its effects, including the removal of non-ultimate buffs.

Health measures the amount of damage that can be taken before dying, and is fundamental to all heroes and units. Units and players with health are allowed to interact with the game, and consequently when your health drops to zero you are disabled from playing until respawning.

Maximum Health
Max health is calculated as follows:

<math>\text{Max HP} = (\text{Base HP} + \text{Boons Earned} \times \text{HP per Boon}) \times (1 + \text{Vitality Bonuses}) + \text{Bonus HP}</math>

Where:
* Base HP is the hero's starting health value.
* Boons Earned is the number of Boons the hero has earned, multiplied by the hero's hero-specific HP gained per Boon.
* Vitality Bonuses are the percentage-based health increases from Vitality items, starting at 8% and increasing with further Vitality investment.
* Bonus HP is flat health added from items, map pickups, and other sources, applied after the Vitality multiplier.

Note that the max health presented in-game is rounded up to the nearest integer.

Base Health
Base health is the sum of starting base health and added base health from boons. It is scaled by the inherent increased base health stats of Vitality items. Different heroes have different amounts of starting base health and added base health from boons.

Health scaling
To see all Heroes health scaling by Boon please visit the Hero Comparison Table.

Bonus Health
Bonus health comes from a variety of sources:

* Items are the most common source of added bonus health. Bonus health can be found on all three item types, but Vitality items tend to provide the largest amounts.
* Golden statues occasionally drop small but permanent added bonus health buffs: +15 before 10 minutes, +25 between 10 and 30 minutes, or +35 after 30 minutes.
* The Survival Powerup immediately grants +200 to +700 bonus health (scales as game goes on), but only for 160 seconds or until death.

Bonus Health is not scaled by increased base health. Bonus health is added after the increased base health multiplier has been applied to base health.

Miscellaneous Health Modifiers
With the purchase of Glass Cannon, the hero's max health is reduced by Glass Cannon after the above calculations.

Example
Kelvin begins the game with 600 Base HP. If Kelvin purchases two tier 1 vitality items, one of which grants 100 bonus health, his max health becomes:

<math>\text{Max HP} = 600 \times (1 + 0.10 + 0.10) + 100 = 820</math>

If Kelvin then earns a power increase, his base health increases by 50, and his max health becomes:

<math>\text{Max HP} = (600 + 50) \times (1 + 0.10 + 0.10) + 100 = 880</math>

Regaining Health
Healing
From the start of the match, heroes will regenerate health slowly over time, typically 2 HP per second. This rate can be increased by purchasing items such as Extra Regen and Fortitude. Health can be regained quickly by returning to the spawn room of the team's base. Various hero abilities can heal, such as Dynamo's Rejuvenating Aurora. Sources of spirit and bullet lifesteal grant heroes the opportunity to regain health by dealing the respective damage type.

Health Bars
<!---->
Health Bars are visual indicators of a hero's current health, located just above each hero. Health bars consist of filled rectangles, arranged in rows of up to ten. Enemy heroes are displayed with orange rectangles, while allied heroes use an off-white color. As the hero loses health, the rectangles deplete horizontally. Each full rectangle represents 100 health, and each full row represents 1000 health.

The small yellow and blue bars above the health bar represent bullet shields and spirit shields, respectively.

Alternate health bar
The alternate health bar is an experimental bar that can be tested by players. This bar always has the same size, and the health count is displayed as markings instead of rectangles. One marking represents 100 health, and a line represents 500 health (from left to right).

This health bar also indicates when other players have ultimates ready, represented by an eye icon that fills up when the ultimate is recharged. Shields are represented by a purple bar.

The alternate health bar can be enabled with the console command <code>citadel_unit_status_use_new true</code>. The command can be added with a <code>+</code> to the game launch options on Steam to be enabled on startup.

Sources
Healing is the act of recovering a unit's current health, which includes various methods such as lifesteal, health regen, and item effects.

Math
The formula for healing is:
<math>\text{healing}_f = \text{healing}_i * \prod(1 - \text{healing}_{red} * b) * (1 + \text{healing}_{amp})</math><br/>

Healing Amp
Healing Amp, also known as Healing Effectiveness, is a stat which increases the amount of healing a hero does with their abilities and items. This affects both healing to themselves and to their allies. Healing Amp affects healing-over-time buffs, such as Healing Rite's active effect.

This stat is represented as a percentage. For example, a 25% gain would increase a heal of 100 to 125.

Healing Reduction
Health reduction is a negative effect which reduces the effectiveness of healing on the unit it is applied to.

Healing reduction is represented as a percentage and stacks multiplicatively. For example, two different sources of 40% healing reduction would result in a total reduction of 64% to incoming heals.

If a player is hit by the same source of healing reduction before its effect has worn off (e.g. two or more enemy players with Healbane), only the first source is applied.
