In Deadlock, there are two opposing teams in the game, each consisting of 6 players. Each team serves either The Sapphire Flame or The Amber Hand, which seek to use the players to complete a ritual and fully realize their existence in the physical world.

Players cannot choose the team they fight for, as this is decided at the start of every match by the matchmaking engine.

During a game, a player works with their team to destroy the enemy Patron, while defending their own.
