“Who wants to summon an elder god?— Dynamo
A LVL/Sandbox is a deity which takes the form of a large extraplanar entity. Each team’s base houses a Patron, The Hidden King and The Archmother, and victory is secured by defeating the opposing team's Patron, completing the ritual.
The Hidden King appears as a shadowy figure with antlers and glowing yellow eyes, bound to a burning wicker man structure. Long, claw-like yellow hands extend from the shadows. His base is a factory filled with large speakers and microphones, and his side of the map features working-class red brick buildings labeled "Downtown". The Archmother wears a broken mask resembling the head of the Statue of Liberty, her form bound to a crystalline structure. Her base is a museum with a Neoclassic aesthetic, and her side of the map features upper-class white brick buildings labeled "Uptown".
During gameplay, the Patrons communicate in third person, commenting on player performance, announcing major events, and offering boons that allow players to level up.
Patrons are formidable units found at the back of each team's base. In its first phase, the Patron is completely unkillable until both Shrines are destroyed.
The Patron has two methods of attack in Phase 1:
After the first half of its health bar is depleted, the Patron enters its second phase. It becomes invulnerable again for a short period as its shadowy form collapses into its structure. The structure then explodes and reforms into an orb that hovers in the pit. Once the transformation completes, it becomes vulnerable again as a Weakened Patron.
Defeating the Patron's first phase shortens the remaining respawn time of any dead players on the defending team by up to 20s (see Last Stand Buff).
The Patron is the only structure that regenerates health out of combat, restoring 120 health/s. It is also protected by backdoor protection, which increases this regeneration by 75 health/s when no enemy Troopers are nearby.
In its second phase, the Patron enters its Weakened form, compressing into a spherical orb that hovers inside the pit of its team's base. The Hidden King's orb appears as a cracked sphere of charred wood and burning debris, with a glowing ember core visible through the fissures, surrounded by jagged wooden spikes. The Archmother's orb appears as a crystalline blue sphere surrounded by jagged rock shards arranged to form a face-like structure, with glowing cyan energy emanating from within.
In this state, it has two attacks:
Similar to Mid Boss, the Patron is immune to all incoming damage from outside the pit, forcing players to get in close if they want to damage it. The Weakened Patron has the same starting HP as the first phase but gains more HP per minute than phase one.
The Weakened Patron has 50% damage resistance when an ally has been in the pit for more than 2s, and 100% damage resistance when two or more allies are in the pit.
The Patron's maximum health is not static and increases as the match progresses, starting at specific times during each phase.
| Phase | Scaling Starts At | Max Health Gained per Minute |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | 20 minutes | 250 |
| Phase 2 | 1 minutes | 450 |
The Patrons are extraplanar[1] elder gods[2][3] who petition heroes to participate in a ritual. Each Patron must form a covenant with 6 Heroes in hopes of being summoned to walk amongst them.[4] In order for the ritual to be completed, the enemy Patron must be destroyed.
Once the ritual is completed, the Patrons can grant one wish to each hero who helped summon them.[5] However, they have limitations, such as being unable or unwilling to bring Grey Talon's deceased family back to life.[6] They also may require a sacrifice in exchange for the wish. The specifics of the Patron's powers and their limitations are unclear.
The Patrons have telepathic powers and can read the thoughts and desires of the heroes (with the exception of Warden[7][8]), as well as communicate with them during the ritual. They use this knowledge to manipulate the heroes to do their bidding.
This is the first time in history that humanity has been able to make contact with the Patrons.[9] Such rituals used to be impossible, as well as forbidden, before the Second Maelstrom.[10] The orders of the Amber Hand and the Sapphire Flame were supposed to safeguard humanity from the Patrons, but recently have changed their objectives.[1]
There are other Patrons besides the Hidden King and the Archmother, but they haven't yet made contact with humanity.[11]
The Patrons are familiar with the Doorman, another extraplanar being, and express surprise at seeing him fighting on their behalf.[12][13] The Doorman calls the Patrons "old friends"[14] and refers to them as City Mother and Amber King.[15]
The Binding of Oathkeeper's multiple endings shows potential wishes granted by the Patrons:
Since the Old Gods, New Blood update, the Patrons speak of themselves in third person. It's currently unclear if this is a formal choice of the Patrons or if the team announcers are actually other entities speaking on behalf of the Patrons.
