The Arroyo's are Ivy's surrogate family that live in Spanish Harlem.

Summary

20 years before the ritual takes place,[1] the Arroyos were a small family that lived in Spanish Harlem while it was under Mendoza's control. One day, Sophia Arroyo and one of her parents were attacked in the streets by thugs, but were saved by Ivy, who was then adopted by the Arroyo's. For the next 18 years, Ivy spent her life fighting against the Mendoza Syndicate to free Spanish Harlem for the Arroyo's.[2]

In the current day, the Arroyo's live happily with Ivy in a Mendoza-free Spanish Harlem. Carlos and Maria had a son named "Manny", while Sophia was heading off for college. Ivy thinks the Arroyo's are the best family in the world.[3]

Ivy is reluctant to leave the Arroyo's on their own for too long.[4][5] This could be due to the fear that the Arroyo's will be hurt if she's away from them.[6][7][8]

The Arroyo's eat Mofongo, a traditional Puerto-Rican dish.[2][9]

The Arroyo's are likely Catholic, based on Ivy's reaction to killing Venator.[10][11]

There are four known Arroyos: Carlos, Maria, Sophia and Manny.

Carlos Arroyo

Carlos Arroyo is the father of the family.

Carlos works as a first-grade tutor[12] and a community organiser for Spanish Harlem, however he's also running for mayor of New York.[13] In one pathway in Ivy's visual novel, Ivy supports Carlos' political campaign and participates in the ritual to help him become mayor[14].

Infernus is voting for Carlos to become mayor,[15] although Billy thinks Carlos is a fraud who uses Ivy for publicity and to increase the property value of Spanish Harlem.[16][17]

Carlos is worried about Ivy participating in the ritual.[18] He dislikes Fairfax Industries[19] and isn't thrilled about Ivy fighting against the OSIC during the ritual.[20]

Ivy idolises Carlos.[21][22] Carlos tells Ivy that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile.[23] He also says that "you can make opportunities, but you can't make people take them".[24]

Maria Arroyo

Maria Arroyo is the mother of the family.

Not much is known about Maria, however she does have a date planned with Carlos at the Baroness Hotel.[25] Ivy also doesn't want her to know about Venator's involvement in the ritual.[11]

Sophia Arroyo

Sophia Arroyo, also known as Sophie, is the elder daughter of the Arroyo's. Based on her being a child when Ivy was brought to life, Sophia's age is likely in her mid-twenties.

Unknown to Ivy and the other Arroyo's, Sophia works at Wraith's casino, helping Wraith as her bookmaker.[26][27] In one pathway in Ivy's visual novel, Ivy discovers Sophia's secret job.[28] While the ending of that pathway is unknown, it likely results in Ivy participating in the ritual is keep Sophia safe.[29]

Sophia attends Columbia College as one of Dynamo's students.[30] Sophia speaks highly of Dynamo[31][32] and Dynamo thinks she's a great student, but he is worried about her due to Sophia sleeping during lessons due to working long shifts at her job.[33] Dynamo is unaware that Sophia works for Wraith.

Sophia tells Ivy that, if she gets mad, she should hold her breath and count to four.[34]

Sophia was the Arroyo who named Ivy.[2]

Sophia listens to Cadence's band.[35]

Manny Arroyo

Manny Arroyo is the younger son of the Arroyo's. Manny's age is unknown, however he's implied to still be in school.[36]

Manny seems to be a bookworm, as he loves reading about Kelvin's adventures[37] and gets taken to libraries by Ivy for Paige's Story Time.[38]

Trivia

  • Spanish Harlem, also known as East Harlem or El Barrio, is a real New York neighborhood with majority Hispanic population.
  • The Arroyo's seem to be spelt "The Arroyo's" instead of "The Arroyos", based on IvyIvy's background.[2]
  • The DoormanThe Doorman says that one of the Arroyo's will die in 5 years, no matter what Ivy does.[7] This could be a bluff, but it's unknown.
