Casting an ability, using an item, and attacking with a weapon are considered "actions" and immediately dismiss the carpet. Most abilities that deal damage after a hero casts Magic Carpet also count as an "action". For example, an enemy hero walking over a Grasping Hands line dismisses a flying Graves' carpet.
As a rule of thumb: A hero dealing single-instance damage will dismiss their carpet and most effects that deal Damage over Time will not. This rule is similar to damage that knocks heroes off of Ziplines but without damage from player-created Units.
The following abilities are notable exceptions:
* Single-Instance Damage that do not dismiss the carpet:
** Mirage: Djinn's Mark
** Graves' Jar of Dead, Grasping Hands (Ghouls), and Borrowed Decree
* <abbr title="Damage over Time>DoT</abbr> or <abbr title="Damage Per Second>DPS</abbr> that will dismiss the carpet:
** Abrams: Siphon Life
** Lady Geist: Life Drain
** Mcginnis:
** Paige: Bookwyrm (Trail)
** Paradox: Pulse Grenade
** Rem: Lil Helpers (Followed Troopers)
** Seven: Lightning Ball
** Victor: Aura of Suffering

* Abilities using Confirm Cast or Quick Cast can be "prepared" while on the carpet, since they aren't cast until the Fire button is pressed or the ability button is released respectively.
Some abilities count as "action" when they deal damage over time and immediately dismiss the carpet. This happens, for example, with Paige's Bookwyrm and Paradox's Pulse Grenade, but not Infernus' Flame Dash. The exact criteria and abilities affected by this are unknown.
** Vindicta's Assassinate does not fire until the Fire button is pressed, allowing her to scope in and not dismiss the carpet. Magic Carpet is affected by the ability's Move Speed limit, but also overrides the scoped camera, causing Assassinate to fire slightly left of the on-screen crosshair.

Dismissing the carpet

Casting an ability, using an item, and attacking with a weapon are considered "actions" and immediately dismiss the carpet. Most abilities that deal damage after a hero casts Magic Carpet also count as an "action". For example, an enemy hero walking over a Grasping Hands line dismisses a flying Graves' carpet.

Notes

  • Abilities using Confirm Cast or Quick Cast can be "prepared" while on the carpet, since they aren't cast until the Fire button is pressed or the ability button is released respectively.
    • Vindicta's Assassinate does not fire until the Fire button is pressed, allowing her to scope in and not dismiss the carpet. Magic Carpet is affected by the ability's Move Speed limit, but also overrides the scoped camera, causing Assassinate to fire slightly left of the on-screen crosshair.
