You'd think people would be more excited about a jar of souls!

— Soul Urn

The Soul Urn, also known as Spirit Urn, Soul Jar or Spirit Jar, is an objective that spawns at the 10-minute mark and respawns in 5-minute intervals.

Players can pick up the urn and deliver it to its destination on the opposite side of the map. Doing so grants the delivering team Soul Orbs, a Golden statue buff, and additional souls for the courier.

The Soul Urn respawns on the side it was delivered to.

Carrying the soul urn

After 10 minutes, the Soul Urn spawns in one of two locations in the outermost lanes: beside the overhanging bridge at York Street (Yellow Lane) or beside the bridge at Park Avenue (Green Lane). The urn always spawns first on Yellow Lane at 10 minutes and alternates lanes every 5 minutes. It descends from the sky for 12 seconds before it can be picked up. A player can grab the landed urn by standing near it for 2 seconds.

While carrying the urn, the courier is affected in several ways:

The courier can drop the urn at any time by pressing their parry key. A heavy melee attack or any stun from an enemy will also force the courier to drop it. If an urn is left on the ground for too long, it will walk back to its spawn point.

Note: The Soul Urn's soul value is determined at the moment it spawns (e.g., 10:00, 15:00). Holding onto the urn for longer durations does not increase its value.

Green candles indicating favored drop-off on the player's side

The drop-off point is on the opposite side of the map, marked by a small green box on the Minimap (or red, when the enemy is carrying it). If a team is behind by a certain soul threshold (15% for the first urn, 10% after), the drop-off point moves closer to their side. This "favored" status is indicated by four floating green candles around the urn. For the leading team (drop-off on the enemy's side), these candles are red.

It takes 2 seconds to turn in the urn. If the delivery takes longer than 45 seconds, the urn begins to damage its courier for 1.5% of their max health per second and disables their Health Regen. This timer pauses if the urn is dropped and resets if the enemy team picks it up.

The courier can double jump in the urn drop-off point without resetting the drop-off counter, allowing them to dodge melee attacks and stuns. Teammates can also use abilities such as Dynamo's Quantum Entanglement and Viscous' The Cube to protect the courier during the drop-off.

Soul urn reward

The Soul Urn's base soul bounty is 1300 Souls and increases by 230 Souls per minute of game time.

  • First Urn (10 mins): 3,600 Souls
  • Second Urn (15 mins): 4,750 Souls
  • Third Urn (20 mins): 5,900 Souls

When a team successfully turns in the Soul Urn, the rewards are distributed as follows:

  • A random Golden Statue buff is granted to each member of the capturing team.
  • 50% of the total Soul value is immediately and equally distributed among all 6 members of the capturing team.
  • The remaining 50% of the total Soul value is spawned as contestable Soul Orbs, which can be claimed by either team.

Courier's bonus

The courier receives a personal bonus equal to 35% of their share of the urn's total value. This bonus is calculated from the full bounty (before the 50/50 split) and is awarded instantly, meaning it cannot be denied by the enemy team.

The comeback mechanic

If the capturing team's total soul count is behind the enemy's by 10% or more (15% for the first urn), a comeback bounty equal to 130% of the Urn's total value is added to the reward before distribution.

  • This entire comeback bonus is awarded instantly to the team and is not split into contestable Soul Orbs. This mechanic makes the Soul Urn a critical, high-value objective for a team that is behind, often nearly doubling the total reward.

Example distribution (3,600 Soul Urn, no comeback)

  • Total Instant Souls: 1,800 (50% of 3,600)
  • Total Souls in Orbs: 1,800 (50% of 3,600)
  1. Each Teammate (5 players) receives:
    • 300 Souls instantly (1,800 / 6 players)
  1. The Courier receives:
    • 300 Souls instantly (their team share)
    • 210 Souls instantly (personal bonus calculated as [3,600 / 6] * 0.35)
    • 4 Golden Statue Buffs
    • Total for Courier: 510 Souls

Update Changes

July 13, 2026

  • (Undocumented) New hero-specific Soul Urn voice lines.

July 9, 2026

  • Urn Runner sprint bonus reduced from +2m to 0 (trailing bonus reduced from +7m to +5m).
  • Urn Runner move speed bonus reduced from +3.5m to +2m.
  • Urn Runner Stamina Recovery increased from +15% to +25%.
  • Urn talking frequency increased from every 8s to every 6s.
  • Urn talking sound distance increased (easier to hear a nearby Urn Runner).

June 30, 2026

  • Urn running is now its own objective. Spawns on either end of the map (where the previous neutral pickup locations were), and gets delivered to the opposite end. Spawns at 10/15/20/25/etc.
  • Urn runner is no longer revealed and is not disarmed or silenced (going through a doorway or mirage teleport still drops it)
  • Urn cannot be manually dropped. It gets dropped when you get hit with a light or heavy melee, are stunned or are killed. It stays where it drops and does not walk back home.
  • Urn runner can no longer parry
  • Urn bounty value starts decaying after 45s from being picked up. It drains gradually over another 45s and then the urn is removed when the bounty is empty.
  • Urn is deposited immediately at the drop off point.
  • Urn bounty when deposited is worth 250 + 70/min for just the urn runner. Still has the comeback bounty component. Upon deposit all of the souls are released as orbs into the air (if another ally secures the orbs, they share the bounty with the urn runner).
  • Urn runner gets +4 permanent buffs on deposit
  • Urn is now louder when it talks and is easier to hear by nearby enemies
  • After 3 Minutes from spawn the Urn will start walking very slowly on his own towards the deposit location
  • Urn runner's passive bonuses while holding it now scales based on how behind you are, rather than being on or off (same as the Unstable Rift 0%-15% NW linear scaling). Bonuses are the same as the previous urn runner bonuses.
  • Debug command: citadel_force_spawn_idol - This spawns the Soul Urn.

Lore

Trapper builds Soul Urns for the New York Municipal Coven.[1]

The Urn is sentient and says its job is to keep New York clean by capturing rogue spirits, which should then be released in another location.

The Urn nags heroes to be delivered quickly and believes its work is underappreciated.

Trivia

  • In Neon Prime, the Urn was called the Idol and dropped off at the Center Temple, a location above the Mid-Boss.
