Ms. Shelly's a good person, and probably wouldn't condone me participating in bloodsport for money. I, however, am not shackled by human morality, and find it a rather entertaining use of my time.

Forged by the hands of a widowed junk yard attendant; Bebop was more than just some scrap golem laborer... he was the son she couldn't have. Together they would work in the iron yard during the day, and listen to jazz at night. It was a predictable, if not comforting routine. But now, Bebop's creator has fallen ill and while Miss Shelly wouldn't approve of the activities that Bebop does at night to pay for her medicine, what she doesn't know can't hurt her.

Overview

Bebop's motivation and wish in the ritual is to cure Ms. Shelly of her illness.[1][2]

Biography

Bebop was created by Shelly Fisher in an act of "craftsmanship, willpower and sacrifice".[3] Assisting her in the junk yard during the day and listening to jazz at night, Bebop was the son Ms. Shelly never had.[4] Bebop was created with access to his own free will, as Ms. Shelly "didn't believe" in putting any bindings on Bebop to enforce his ethics.[5] As such, Bebop's love for his "mother" is genuine.[6] Bebop seems to have a soul.[7]

When Ms. Shelly fell ill, Bebop needed to find a way to pay for her medicine. In the end, Bebop decided to take up pit fighting in the Bear Pit as the main source of income for Ms. Shelly's medicine.[8][9][10] While he finds fighting for money an entertaining use of his time,[11] Bebop intends to retire once Ms. Shelly is cured of her illness.[12][13] Bebop is trying to stick to honest work.[14]

As Ms. Shelly's condition is getting worse, Bebop has decided to participate in the ritual so the Patrons can save his creator.[1][2]

Bebop is nicknamed as "the scrap golem".[15] Bebop himself was named after the jazz style "bebop".[16]

Personality

Bebop was raised to be polite and proper.[17] He speaks highly of Ms. Shelly and often offers to introduce people to meet her.[18][19][20]

Bebop doesn't particularly value human life,[21] referring to humans as "organics" and generally thinking of them to be frail.[22][23][11] That said, Bebop doesn't want to take up a career as an assassin as he knows Ms. Shelly wouldn't approve of him killing people.[24][25] He also shows kindness to characters like Pocket and Victor.[26][19]

Though Bebop engages in pitfighting for the money,[27] he also enjoys it and finds it entertaining, particularly when it comes to hurting Lash.[11][28]

Information

Bebop can speak French.[29] He can't speak Japanese.[30]

Bebop knows how to bake biscuits.[20] He smells vaguely of cinnamon.[31]

Character Relationships

The creator of Bebop.

Bebop refers to Ms. Shelly as his "mother".[6] He's willing to do whatever he can to save her.[32]

Both champions of the Bear Pit, Bebop and Lash have a rivalry fueled by hate for each other.[33][28][34]

Lash used to use an uppercut instead of Ground Strike, but refused to use it ever again after seeing Bebop use an uppercut.[35][36]

Bebop has beaten Lash in the Bear Pit once,[37] and Lash has beaten Bebop at least once afterwards.[38][39]

Neither Bebop nor Lash elaborate on why they hate the other so much.[40][41]

Lash has at least 87 reasons why he's better than Bebop.[42]

Mo & Krill watch Bebop's fights in the Bear Pit and consistently bet on him winning.[43] They know Ms. Shelly and have tried to help her.[44]

Character Interactions

  • Bebop offers Pocket a place to stay after the ritual.[26]
  • Bebop wanted McGinnis to speak with Ms. Shelly.[45]
  • Lady Geist regards Bebop as a man of culture after learning he speaks French.[46]

  • Venator prays with Bebop for the sake of Ms. Shelly.[54]

Storyline D - Bebop intervenes as Lady Geist lunges for Ms. Shelly

Bebop makes an appearance in storyline D in The Binding of Oathkeeper.

Lady Geist was looking for somebody desperate to transfer Oathkeeper to due to her failing ward. After looking at Doctor Johann Jr.'s files, she discovered the existence of Shelly Fisher. Believing that Ms. Shelly would be desperate enough to take Oathkeeper from her, Lady Geist went to visit her home.

When Lady Geist arrives at Ms. Shelly's home, Bebop (wearing a pink apron) answers the door, telling Lady Geist that Ms. Shelly isn't feeling well at the moment and isn't taking visitors. Ms. Shelly calls to Bebop from inside, telling him to let Lady Geist in. While Ms. Shelly and Lady Geist are talking in one room, Bebop is preparing chocolate biscuits in another. When Bebop enters the room, Lady Geist is about to attack Ms. Shelly after her Oathkeeper offer was denied. Lady Geist lunges for Ms. Shelly, when Bebop intervenes and smashes the ward on Lady Geist's arm containing Oathkeeper. Bebop protects Ms. Shelly while Oathkeeper is freed, and Oathkeeper tells Bebop to leave with Ms. Shelly as he makes up for lost time with Lady Geist.
