Lore is the story of the world of Deadlock and its characters.

The Lore of Deadlock is pieced together from various sources: Hero backstories, voice lines, the environment, and the unreleased visual novels.

Hero backstories can be found in-game in the lower-right corner book icon of the hero select screen.

Storyline

Main article: Storyline

The supernatural always existed in the world of Deadlock, but only when an eclipse triggered an event known as the Maelstrom near the end of the 19th century, which opened Astral Gates across the Earth, did the world at large accept it wasn't just myth.

Now, 50 years later, two Patrons, the Hidden King and the Archmother, are trying to enter this plane, promising to fulfill the wish of anyone that helps them by completing the ritual. The ritual includes two teams fighting each other in a battle in the streets of the Cursed Apple, trying to prevent the other team from summoning their patron.

Groups

There are various organizations featured in Deadlock:

• Occult Security and Investigation Commission (OSIC) – A secretive government organization that employs Haze.
• The Baxter Society – An organization of monster hunters whose members include Shiv, and formerly Grey Talon and Calico.
• The Tunnel Rats – A staple of New York’s criminal underground that counts Mo & Krill as enforcers and smugglers.
• The New York Oracle – Bringing the latest news and occult discoveries to the citizens of New York.
• Fairfax Industries – A powerful company spearheading the occult industrial complex that employs McGinnis and is connected to Pocket.
• The Friends of Humanity – A group of xenophobic extremists prioritizing humanity’s safety above all else, drawing opposition from Vindicta and Grey Talon.
• The Mendoza Syndicate – A crime syndicate dismantled by Ivy that once ruled the streets of Spanish Harlem.
• The Seventh Moon - A crime family from Japan led by Yamato, looking to get power in America.
• The Municipal Coven – The caretakers of New York.
• The Paradox Organisation - A group of time-thieves who attempt high-stake heists for personal challenge and satisfaction.

There are also a variety of brands that advertise their products and services in the Cursed Apple.

Locations

The world of Deadlock includes a wide variety of environments:

• The Cursed Apple – The central setting of Deadlock, where the ritual to summon the Patrons takes place.
• The Astral Gates – The primary connections between Earth and other planes of existence.
• Ixia – One of the extraplanar locations beyond the Astral Gates, where demon-like beings like Apollo reside.
• The Deep – A peculiar deep-sea habitat where Viscous comes from.
• The Bear Pit – An underground fighting arena where Wraith and Mendoza make bets, often between Lash and Bebop.
• Jezebel’s Billiard Hall – A renovated church where Infernus serves drinks.
• The Paradox Museum – An exhibit where Paradox’s stolen relics are publicly showcased.
• Lost Whisper – The oubliette that Seven escaped from.
• The Baroness Hotel - The luxurious hotel where The Doorman serves.
• Blackmore Academy - The wealthy high school that Apollo and Graves attend.

Visual novels

Main article: The Library

Visual novels are planned to be the main narrative medium to expand the world of Deadlock.

• The Binding of Oathkeeper, starring Lady Geist, shows the ward binding Oathkeeper weakening, forcing Lady Geist to find a way to stop Oathkeeper from breaking free and killing her.
• Ivy's visual novel follows Ivy trying to find a new purpose in life after dismantling the Mendoza Syndicate.
• Holliday's visual novel follows Holliday on her revenge-fuelled quest to take down the Troubadour.

Infernus and Kelvin are also planned to have visual novels according to notes from The Binding of Oathkeeper, with the first chapter of Infernus' novel referenced in the game files, but neither had further development thus far. References to a Mina visual novel were also datamined after the Old Gods, New Blood update.
