A victim of John Hathorne during the Salem Witch Trials, Vindicta got a second chance of life when her spirit was brought back to the mortal plane during the first Maelstrom (the event that introduced the supernatural to the public at large).
Waging a one ghost war against "The Friends of Humanity", a neo inquisition formed by Hathorne's descendants; Vindicta looks to keep the supernatural safe from Hathorne's ilk, and she isn't afraid to stack as many bodies as needed to do it.
Overview
[edit | edit source]Vindicta's motivation in the ritual is to wipe out John Hathorne's bloodline and the Friends of Humanity.[1][2][3][4] Her main goal seems to be getting revenge on Hathorne's bloodline, with the destruction of the Friends of Humanity being a side benefit.[5]
Biography
[edit | edit source]Vindicta says she uses her given name.[6] Puritans in the 17th Century were known to give unusual names to their children, as a way of honoring their religion.
Vindicta says she was a child who was "unjustly condemned" during the Salem Witch Trials.[7] John Hathorne was known in the real Salem Witch Trials for questioning accusers and the accused in trial, often leaving the accused guilty.[8]
Vindicta has been dead for roughly 200 years[9] before returning to life during the first Maelstrom, 50 years before the ritual.[10] She calls herself a "ghost", though she believes that's a simplification of her condition.[11] After the initial shock of finding herself in early 20th century New York, she was lost for a while before finding a new purpose in hunting down the Friends of Humanity.[12][13]
Vindicta's main target is the current leader of the Friends of Humanity, also named John Hathorne, who is a descendant of the original Hathorne who killed her.[14][15] Vindicta has killed John Hathorne's brother while he was on a speedboat,[16] and assassinated someone else during the Boston Marathon.[17]
At some point in recent years, Vindicta started working with Grey Talon, as he was also hunting the Friends of Humanity to avenge his murdered family.[18][19]
Vindicta's exploits have become known in Ixia. According to Apollo, Vindicta is called "Hasha Vogali", which is Ixian for "Death's Whisper".[20]
Personality
[edit | edit source]Vindicta is jaded and pragmatic with a single-minded drive for revenge.[21] She doesn't believe in the law or the government,[22][23] or that there will be any justice for the crimes of the Friends of Humanity unless people like her and Grey Talon take action against them.[24] Even if Vindicta kills Hathorne, she intends to keep killing until the Friends of Humanity are exterminated as she has "all the time in the world".[25][4] Vindicta also thinks there are more people worth killing besides the Friends of Humanity,[26] although she hasn't considered becoming a professional assassin.[27]
After returning from the dead, Vindicta says she was "lost" for a while before finding her purpose of revenge.[13] She ultimately sees her actions as her "saving life".[28][29] She thinks naiveté is dangerous because it can get people hurt.[30]
Some heroes find Vindicta's methods too extremist, even if they sympathize with her cause.[31][32][33]
Appearance
[edit | edit source]Vindicta appears as a spectral light blue-skinned young woman with glowing blue eyes, long braided blueish-white hair with a red ribbon, dark purple lips, and black mascara running down her face. She wears a red jacket with a black necktie over a dark blue skirt with ragged edges. She carries stakes, bullets and a bell on a large belt. She's barefoot, which other characters comment on.[34][35][36] Her weapon is a sniper rifle.
Information
[edit | edit source]Vindicta will occasionally hum the song Simple Gifts after using a shot of her ultimate.[37] This is a song that originated from the Shaker religion in the early 1800s.
Character Relationships
[edit | edit source]Vindicta and Grey Talon have hunted the Friends of Humanity together and regard each other as friends.[38][19][39]
Vindicta calls Grey Talon by his first name and believes that, if her father was like Grey Talon, she would never have died during the Salem Witch Trials.[18]
Vindicta doesn't know what Grey Talon saw in Shiv.[40]
When killing Drifter, Vindicta dedicates it to Grey Talon.[41][42]
Character Interactions

- Vindicta hates Mina,[44] believing her to be "outrageously stupid".[45]
- Vindicta believes her life was harder than Pocket's,[46][47] while Pocket believes Vindicta's rage is misguided and she just wants to watch the world burn.[32][48]
- Vindicta believes Ivy is naive and warns her that, if she doesn't smarten up soon, someone she cares about will be hurt.[30]
- Haze warns Vindicta to "quit while she's ahead" because murdering John Hathorne will "galvanize" the Friends of Humanity.[25] She calls Vindicta a "domestic terrorist".[31]
- Apollo commends Vindicta for her war against the Friends of Humanity, although he dislikes her dishonorable tactics.[49][50]
- Graves wishes she could help Vindicta with her problems.[51][52]
