The Soul Urn, also known as Spirit Urn, Soul Jar or Spirit Jar, is an objective that spawns at the 12-minute mark and respawns in 6-minute intervals.

You'd think people would be more excited about a jar of souls!

— Soul Urn

Players can pick up the urn and deliver it to its destination at the side lanes of the map. Doing so grants the delivering team Soul Orbs, a Golden statue buff, and additional souls for the courier.

Carrying the soul urn

After 12 minutes, the Soul Urn spawns in one of 6 possible locations:

  • Neutral: Next to the bridge in either Yellow or Green Lane
  • Favored: Next to a jungle camp near either the team's Yellow or Green Walker
  • Unfavored: Next to a jungle camp near either the enemy team's Yellow or Green Walker

The urn alternates lanes every 6 minutes. However, if the urn is picked up before the next spawn time and delivered after (i.e. picked up before 18 minutes and delivered after), it does not spawn again until the next scheduled spawn time. It descends from the sky for 12 seconds before it can be picked up. A player can grab the landed urn by hitting it with a Melee Attack (light or heavy).

While carrying the urn, the courier is affected in several ways:

The courier can drop the urn at any time by pressing their parry key. Melee attacks (light or heavy) and Melee Damage abilities from enemy Players (or NPCs), and any stun source will force the courier to drop it. If the urn is left on the ground, it will wait indefinitely if there are enemies of the last courier's team in a 40m radius, or for 13s if there are only ally players in that radius. Once either this timer runs out or all players leave the 40m radius, it cannot be picked up anymore and will run back to its spawn point.

The team favored by the urn (see "Comeback mechanic" below) receives 35% bullet and spirit resist in a 60m radius of the urn while it's being deposited.

Note: The Soul Urn's soul value is determined at the moment it spawns. Holding onto the urn for longer durations does not increase its value.

Delivering the urn

The drop-off point is under the bridge in the middle of the lane opposite to the urn spawn. Any players near this area while the urn is being carried and delivered are revealed in the minimap, like the courier.

Once the courier drops off the urn, it starts a "Depositing" phase, the duration of which is based on the net worth of the courier's team (see "Comeback mechanic" below):

  • Delivered by favored team (behind): 5s
  • Delivered by neutral team: 10s
  • Delivered by unfavored team (ahead): 15s

A player on the enemy team can contest the urn during this phase by hitting it with a heavy melee attack, which switches to their team's timer and adds +3s to their timer.

Anti-stalling mechanics

To prevent one team from holding the urn for too long without delivering it, the urn begins to deal Pure Damage to its courier for 5% of their max health per second and disables their Health Regen after carrying it for 30 seconds (counting the time it's held by the entire team). However, this timer is paused if there are enemies in a 40m radius of the courier or if the urn is dropped, and resets if the enemy team picks it up. 2s are added to the team's timer whenever the urn is picked up again.

If the team's urn timer goes over 45s, the urn will run back to its spawn if it's dropped again with no enemies nearby.

Soul urn reward

The Soul Urn's base soul bounty is 1300 Souls and increases by 230 Souls per minute of game time. This value is "locked in" at the minute the Urn spawns.

  • 12-minute Urn: 4,060 Souls
  • 18-minute Urn: 5,440 Souls
  • 30-minute Urn: 8,200 Souls

When a team successfully turns in the Soul Urn:

  • A random Golden Statue buff is granted to each member of the capturing team.
  • 3 bonus buffs are granted to the last player who contested the urn, or to the courier if no one contested.
  • All souls are distributed instantly and equally to all team members.

Courier's bonus

The courier receives a personal bonus equal to 35% of their total share (Base Share + Comeback Bonus). This bonus is awarded instantly upon delivery and cannot be denied by the enemy team. They also get 4 random Golden Statue buffs.

The "Comeback" mechanic

Issue: The math for comeback bounty may be inaccurate and needs more testing

Green candles indicating favored drop-off on the player's side

If the capturing team is behind by 10% or more (15% for the first urn), the Urn becomes a "Comeback," "Preferred," or "Favored" Urn. If this is the case, candles will appear around the urn after it has landed. In the case of one's own team being in a soul deficit, green candles will rotate around the urn. In the case that the enemy team is in a soul deficit, red candles will rotate around the urn.

This adds a Comeback Bonus to the reward:

  • Bonus Calculation: The bonus scales based on game time and the team's soul deficit. It uses a growth rate of 130 Souls per minute.
  • Approximate Formula: Individual Bonus = 130 × Minutes × Deficit %
  • Safe Payout: The entire Comeback Bonus is added to the Instant Soul pool.
  • Orbs: The contestable Soul Orbs do not increase during a comeback; they remain fixed at 50% of the original base share.

Note: The first 3,000 souls of net worth difference are generally ignored when calculating the deficit, which may slightly dampen the bonus for smaller leads.

Reward scenarios

The following examples use the 10-minute Soul Urn (Base Value: 3,600 Souls).

Scenario 1: Standard delivery (Team is winning or even)

  • Individual Base Share: 600 Souls (3,600 ÷ 6)
  • Orbs per player: 300 Souls (50% of share, deniable)
  • Instant per player: 300 Souls (50% of share, guaranteed)
  1. Each Teammate receives: 600 Souls total (300 instant + 300 from orbs)
  2. The Courier receives: 810 Souls total (300 instant + 300 orbs + 210 courier bonus)
    • The courier's 35% bonus is: 600 × 0.35 = 210 souls.

Scenario 2: Comeback delivery (30% deficit)

  • Individual Base Share: 600 Souls
  • Comeback Bonus per player: 130 × 10 × 0.30 = 390 Souls
  • Total Individual Share: 990 Souls (600 base + 390 bonus)
  1. Each Teammate receives: 990 Souls total (690 instant + 300 from orbs)
    • Instant souls include 300 (base) + 390 (comeback).
  2. The Courier receives: 1,337 Souls total (1,037 instant + 300 orbs)
    • Courier bonus is: 990 × 0.35 = 346.5 souls.
    • Instant souls include 300 (base) + 390 (comeback) + 346.5 (bonus).
Soul Urn Bounty Progression (Standard Delivery)
Minute Total Pot Teammate Total Courier Total Team Instant (Total)
10 3,600 600 810 2,010
15 4,750 792 1,069 2,652

Update Changes

July 13, 2026

  • (Undocumented) New hero-specific  Soul Urn voice lines.

July 9, 2026

  •  Urn Runner sprint bonus reduced from +2m to 0 (trailing bonus reduced from +7m to +5m).
  •  Urn Runner move speed bonus reduced from +3.5m to +2m.
  •  Urn Runner Stamina Recovery increased from +15% to +25%.
  •  Urn talking frequency increased from every 8s to every 6s.
  •  Urn talking sound distance increased (easier to hear a nearby  Urn Runner).

June 30, 2026

  •  Urn running is now its own objective. Spawns on either end of the map (where the previous neutral pickup locations were), and gets delivered to the opposite end. Spawns at 10/15/20/25/etc.
  •  Urn runner is no longer revealed and is not disarmed or silenced (going through a doorway or mirage teleport still drops it)
  •  Urn cannot be manually dropped. It gets dropped when you get hit with a light or heavy melee, are stunned or are killed. It stays where it drops and does not walk back home.
  •  Urn runner can no longer parry
  •  Urn bounty value starts decaying after 45s from being picked up. It drains gradually over another 45s and then the urn is removed when the bounty is empty.
  •  Urn is deposited immediately at the drop off point.
  •  Urn bounty when deposited is worth 250 + 70/min for just the urn runner. Still has the comeback bounty component. Upon deposit all of the souls are released as orbs into the air (if another ally secures the orbs, they share the bounty with the urn runner).
  •  Urn runner gets +4 permanent buffs on deposit
  •  Urn is now louder when it talks and is easier to hear by nearby enemies
  • After 3 Minutes from spawn the  Urn will start walking very slowly on his own towards the deposit location
  •  Urn runner's passive bonuses while holding it now scales based on how behind you are, rather than being on or off (same as the Unstable Rift 0%-15% NW linear scaling). Bonuses are the same as the previous urn runner bonuses.
  • Debug command: citadel_force_spawn_idol - This spawns the  Soul Urn.

Lore

Trapper builds Soul Urns for the New York Municipal Coven.[1]

The Urn is sentient and says its job is to keep New York clean by capturing rogue spirits, which should then be released in another location.

The Urn nags heroes to be delivered quickly and believes its work is underappreciated.

Trivia

  • In Neon Prime, the Urn was called the Idol and dropped off at the Center Temple, a location above the Mid-Boss.
