Background

Lady Geist

See Lady Geist/Lore for more story content.

Once, Lady Jeanne Geist was the toast of the town. But as time passed and her beauty faded she found herself further and further from her glory days in High Society until finally she was nothing more than a frail woman in a nursing home, telling stories of a glorious past. And that’s when Oathkeeper revealed himself. A powerful spirit from another plane, Oathkeeper offered her a path to reclaim her past glories… he could restore her youth; all she had to do was drain the essence of the living to sustain herself.

Geist was torn. Obviously murder was ghoulish business, and undoubtedly Oathkeeper was not an entity that could be trusted… but still, the thought of having a second chance of reliving her youth was too good to pass up. And so she concocted a plan: after making a pact with Oathkeeper she would bind and ward him, limiting his influence and pull over her. Oathkeeper would still get fed; but on her terms, not his.

However, as years have turned to decades; the strength of the Ward has weakened, and Oathkeeper hungers more than he ever has in the past…

Overview

Lady Geist is one of the playable heroes in Deadlock. While her exact motivations change depending on what path she takes in The Binding of Oathkeeper, Lady Geist's main goal in the ritual is to prevent Oathkeeper from breaking free and killing her.[1][2][3][4]

Lady Geist has an old grudge against the Paradox Organisation after they stole one of her husband's paintings 50 years ago.[5][6][7]

Lady Geist is fashionable and well-versed in notable haberdasheries and brands.[8][9][10]

Lady Geist seems to own a foundation for homeless people.[11] Johann Geist used to take her to "hundreds" of fundraisers in the past.[12]

Lady Geist enjoys going to Jezebel's and offers to help prevent the bar from being shut down by the Alchemy Bureau.[13][14][15] She used to like the Baroness Hotel, but believes their "standards went to hell".[16][17] Lady Geist visited the Paradox Museum once, and thought it was "cliché and overwrought".[18]

It's implied that, had Lady Geist made her deal with Oathkeeper transparent, she would've been hunted down by the Baxter Society.[19] The OSIC are aware of her deal with Oathkeeper and are keeping an eye on her, but haven't sent a Sandman after her yet.[20][21][22]

Lady Geist's gun was a gift from Johann Geist.[23]

Lady Geist's hair smells vaguely like flowers.[24]

Biography

Lady Jeanne Geist (married name) was born in France in 1815. She married German artist Johann Geist, and moved to America at some point in her life.[25] Jeanne and Johann had a son named Walter in 1850, and Johann died in 1880.[26]

Circa 1890s, when Jeanne was around 84 years old, the first Maelstrom happened, bringing various supernatural forces to Earth, and the spirit Oathkeeper was one of them.

Circa 1890s, when Jeanne was an old lady in a nursing home, the first Maelstrom happened, alerting the public to the existence of the supernatural.[27] At this time, the spirit Oathkeeper approached Jeanne with an offer: Jeanne would make a pact with Oathkeeper to regain her youth in exchange for draining the life of others. She was initially reluctant, but accepted the deal on the grounds that she would choose who dies. However, with the help of Walter, she made a ward to keep Oathkeeper under control. As the ward was "against the spirit of the deal," Oathkeeper promised to make Jeanne suffer if he ever broke free. After Walter died, the responsibilities of maintaining the ward fell on his son, Johann "Jr.", who maintains the ward to the current day.

Now, 50 years after her initial pact and on the eve of the second Maelstrom, Geist has to decide how she'll deal with Oathkeeper, and whether she'll continue to kill others to stay young or accept her natural aging and eventual death.[28]

As the ward containing Oathkeeper is weakening, Lady Geist has to kill more frequently to stay young, going from being able to kill one person to last throughout "swimsuit season", to only getting 2 months of youth for killing three people. Her main victims are usually the homeless.[29][30]

Personality

Lady Geist holds her public image in extremely high regard.[31][32][33] She seems to have a reputation for being ruthless and doesn't want any acts of kindness to soften her image.[34][35]

Lady Geist has no moral issues with murdering people, often preferring to kill victims while they're helpless.[36] Despite this, Lady Geist doesn't enjoy killing people, instead seeing it as the only way to survive.[37][38] The thought of aging terrifies Lady Geist.[39]

While cruel, Lady Geist holds the memory of her deceased husband and son in high regard.[40][41][42]

The public are unaware of Lady Geist's deal with Oathkeeper.[43][44] However, the other heroes in the ritual are fully aware the Oathkeeper is binded to Lady Geist. The other heroes often describe Lady Geist as "evil" and "a monster".[45]

Character Relationships

Established relationships

Oathkeeper has been bound to Lady Geist's arm for the past 50 years.

As mentioned in the biography, Oathkeeper wants to kill Lady Geist for binding him as it was "against the spirit of the deal".[46] However, Oathkeeper does like Lady Geist's apathy and considers her "one of his favorites".[47]

Aside from keeping Oathkeeper under control, the ward also prevents Oathkeeper from interacting with the world outside his prison. Lady Geist can choose when she wants Oathkeeper to see or listen to the outside world.[48] Only Lady Geist can hear Oathkeeper speak, with the main exception of   Graves.[49]

Doctor Johann Geist Jr. is Lady Geist's grandson. Like his father before him, Johann Jr. repairs and maintains the ward Lady Geist uses to contain Oathkeeper.[28]

Johann Jr. and Lady Geist have gotten into arguments about Oathkeeper in the past, as Johann believes Oathkeeper is a "cancer".[50]

Lady Geist refers to Johann as "one of the best doctors in New York,"[51] although she also thinks he can be sanctimonious.[52]

The relationship between Lady Geist and Johann Jr. can vary depending on the pathway in The Binding of Oathkeeper. In storyline G, she sacrifices Johann to the Patrons in order to make Oathkeeper remain obedient to her. However, in storyline H, she chooses to sacrifice herself instead of Johann to banish Oathkeeper from Earth.

As someone who frequents Jezebel's, Lady Geist is friends with Infernus and Hank.[28]

Lady Geist refers to Infernus as "Fern" and "her bartender".[53][54] She likes Infernus' recipe of gin and tonic.[55]

As Jezebel's is under threat of closure, Lady Geist offers to help Infernus save the bar.[56] In one pathway in The Binding of Oathkeeper, Lady Geist gives Oathkeeper to Hank on the promise of providing the resources needed to keep the bar open.[57]

Kelvin's Arctic expedition was funded by Lady Geist.[58][59] Lady Geist takes great offense if Kelvin is on the enemy team.[60][61]

Neon Prime - Ghost

Spectre/Ghost (Neon Prime)

In Neon Prime, Lady Geist was originally a character named Spectre, who was later renamed to Ghost.

Ghost was described as a creepy old man,[95] seemingly with similar life-stealing capabilities to Lady Geist.[96][97]

Ghost was implied to be the leader of an undead crime syndicate known as the "Eighth Sun".[98][99][100]

Lady Geist still uses "ghost" as her codename in the in-game files.
