Today... nine Commandments will have to do.

The Venators of St. Benedict are a Vatican-sanctioned order whose members are deployed to regions with a high concentration of supernatural predators.   Few in number, their modus operandi is to observe, identify, and exterminate. They are methodical, they are precise, and once they identify a threat to the flock they are relentless.

But even amongst those who are called The Sword Of St. Benedict, one stands apart from the others.  A man whose hardened heart has allowed him to pay terrible prices in the name of the greater good... and he has once again been dispatched to New York.

Overview

edit

Venator's mission and motivation in the ritual is to kill the Patrons.[1][2] He's prepared to die to achieve his mission.[3]

Biography

edit

Venator's real name is Quinn Rourke.[4][5] He is commonly referred to by his title, "Father",[5][6] which is ordinary for Catholic priests. Venator seems to have originated from Ireland, based on his accent.

There are less than 24 active Venators,[7] though more have been killed in the past.[8] The Roman numeral "48" under Venator's typography may indicate that he is the 48th Venator. While there are multiple Venators, they usually work alone.[9] The Venators have taken an Oath that their life doesn't belong to them, but instead to service.[10]

According to Venator, there is an ancient evil stirring in New York, which is why the Vatican have sent him there.[11][12] The Vatican has dispatched Venator on missions across America before, with one of his past missions having him work with   Abrams at a brownstone.[13]

The Venators of St. Benedict have a friendly rivalry with the Baxter Society.[14]

Personality

edit

Venator showcases that he's willing to do whatever he can for the greater good, burdening himself with the sins he commits for the sake of others.[15][13] His zealous behavior often causes him to be called "angry" and "unhinged".[16] He does, however, judge people based on their actions rather than their appearances or species.[17]

Venator believes New York needs his help, and refuses to let its people down.[18] He is dedicated to his missions and is willing to put aside the law and his own grievances to achieve them.[19][20] Venator is prepared to kill anyone who gets in the way of his missions.[21] As the Venators are a results-centric order,[22] Venator has killed innocent people before and seems to believe collateral damage is acceptable.[23][24] Venator lets his pain and anger from his past failures fuel his dedication and methods instead of letting them consume him.[25]

Despite being dedicated to fighting evil, Venator finds value in having "questionable" friends.[26] Venator likes to drink whiskey.[27]

Venator seems to have some kind of affection for fire.[28][29] When killing   Infernus, Venator mentions that he would gladly walk through the fire, and that it would only forge him into something stronger.[30][31] It's unknown if this is linked to the burn marks on Venator's face.

Venator refers to himself as a Carnifex, a Latin word for executioner.[32]

Venator respects the Baxter Society, though he doesn't always agree with them.[33] Venator doesn't have any grievances against Ixians, but does refer to them as "demons" which is implied to be offensive.[17][34][35] Venator wants Fairfax Industries to fall.[36][37]

Appearance

edit

Venator is a middle-aged burly white man with dark green eyes (the left one is white and seems to be blind), black hair with gray streaks, a short beard and moustache, and burn scars over the left side of his face and left arm. He wears a military vest with crosses over priest clothes (the left side of which is burned at the end), black pants, black boots with purple shoelaces, fingerless gloves, and a watch in his left pulse. He carries a purple book (presumably a Bible), 3 stakes, a thurible, his Christian cross-shaped crossbow used for   Ira Domini in his back, and a sawed-off shotgun used for   Gutshot in his left hand. His main weapon is a submachine gun similar to a Heckler & Koch MP5, with its under-barrel grenade launcher decorated to resemble a Votive candle, and Rosary beads in place of a sling harness.

Information

edit

"Venator" means "hunter" in Latin. His ultimate   Ira Domini translates to "Wrath of the Lord".

Venator's weapon is named after the Bible passage Jeremiah 51:20: "Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms".

Character Relationships

edit

Abrams has worked on a case with Venator before.

While Abrams' side of the conversation is missing, Venator and Abrams had an incident at a brownstone where Venator made a judgement call that "saved lives", despite Abrams' concerns about Venator's methods. What exactly happened in the brownstone is unclear, but Venator doesn't blame Abrams for "not having the stomach to do what needed to be done", and considers Abrams to be a good man.[13]

Venator wants Abrams to give him the Tome,[38] believing it to be evil.[39]

Venator knew Calico from when she was in the Baxter Society, but loathes her now that she's an assassin.[40]

Venator believes that, for the right price, Calico would be willing to kill Ava.[41]

When killing Calico, Venator mentions that it was "for   Grey Talon".[42] He also references the 30 pieces of silver that Judas received for betraying Jesus when killing Calico, presumably referring to Calico leaving the Baxter Society.[43]

Venator doesn't believe in Shiv's change of heart, waiting for him to slip up and ruin his "charade".[44][45]

Venator is puzzled by   Grey Talon's choice of protégé and believes that Shiv should be dead. He warns Grey Talon that, if Shiv slips up, he won't be able to protect Shiv from the Swords of Saint Benedict.[46]

Venator believes Hell is too good for Drifter if he kills him.[47] If they're on the same team, Venator promises to kill Drifter after the ritual.[48]

Drifter has killed other Venators before,[49] though he had higher expectations for Venator Quinn.[50]

Venator respects Grey Talon, referring to him by his first name and promising to pray for his deceased family.[51][52]

While on opposing teams, Grey Talon wishes they were fighting on the same side.[53]

Venator is a friend of Marlowe and calls him a "bastard".[54]

Venator prays with Holliday before the ritual to try and help heal her trauma from the Macomb massacre. While it doesn't work, Holliday appreciates Venator for trying.[55]

Venator also warns Holliday to tend her pain and anger before it consumes her.[25]

Character Interactions

edit
  • As a hunter of the wicked, Venator showcases righteous anger towards malevolent creatures and objects, including  Abrams' Tome,[56]  Graves' lich hand,[57] and Oathkeeper.[58]
    • Venator warns Graves that the lich is using her, demanding that she gives him the lich hand.[59] Graves misinterprets the warnings as Venator threatening her.[57]
  • Venator prays with  Bebop for the sake of Ms. Shelly,[60] and prays with  Holliday to try and make her feel better about The Troubadour's massacre in Macomb.[55]
  • Venator believes  Paige's brother, Bryce, is beyond saving, expressing remorse that she's "thrown away her life to save someone who doesn't deserve it".[61][62]
  • Venator recognises that   The Doorman is more ancient and powerful than he lets on.[63][64]
  • Venator and  Silver get along with each other, planning to go drink whiskey together after the ritual.[65][66]
  • Venator promises to protect   Rem and help him get home while they're on the same team.[67][68] If they're on opposing teams, however, Venator believes Rem's putting on a façade and calls him a "furry bastard".[69][70]
  • Venator believes that   Vindicta lost her way and says that her rage has become indiscriminate.[71][72]
  • Venator's appearance unnerves   Celeste and   Infernus. Celeste thinks he looks like a burlesque dancer.[73][74]
  •  The Archmother and  The Hidden King know Venator sees them as his enemy, but each try to convince Venator to work with them to kill the other Patron.[75][76]
  •  Paradox was expecting Venator to come after her at some point, implying the Paradox Organisation has robbed the Vatican before.[77]
  •  Vyper likes Venator's voice.[78]
