Professor Dynamo is a Hero in Deadlock. He is a man of wit, using his brain and his brawn to provide support to his teammates by healing them, teleporting them, knocking his opponents into the air, and when the time is right, unleashing a Singularity which can drastically shift the tides of battle.

One black hole can make all the difference.

Once just a mere professor for Columbia College, his life would change after letting his ego get the best of him when he and his team of professors were studying an Astral Gate in New York. Dynamo ventured too close to the anomaly which obliterated his body and reduced it to that of a dying star. But that didn't stop him, because although his body may be gone, his spirit and curiosity live on, with his condition only further fueling his desire for knowledge and a way out of his metal body.

  • Kinetic Pulse has a 0.42s animation between pressing a button and stomp coming out.

Dispel Magic triggers heal and other buffs only if it's used during the "getting up" part of knockdown. Activating it during the descent part does nothing and effectively wastes the activation.

  • After Dynamo acquires T2 upgrade Dispel Magic can be used during the descent part and some time after since it starts triggering off T2 debuffs.
  • No matter when Dispel Magic is activated it does not interrupt or in any way affects the Displacement.

Debuff Resist reduces duration of both displacement and T2 debuffs. For displacement specifically it achieves it by reducing the height of the knockup applied by the stomp.

  • Displacement: activating Unstoppable does nothing, being Unstoppable protects against future displacements.
  • T2 Move Slow: activating Unstoppable drops the debuff, being Unstoppable protects against it.
  • T2 Bullet Resist: activating Unstoppable does not drop the debuff, being Unstoppable does not protect against it.

  • Pulse range gets increased by Ability Range upgrades.
  • Pulse Width does not get increased by Ability Range upgrades.

While not written in the game UI, displacement duration gets increase with Ability Duration. To achieve that it makes stomp launch enemy heroes higher.

  • Resets air dashes, air jumps, and down dashes upon use.
  • Alternate cast notes:
    • Teleported allies restore a bar of stamina, but do not reset their dashes.
    • T3 upgrade restores half a charge of all charged abilities for allies.
    • If the ability's target point is on the ground, all heroes will be moved to the exact spot and clump there. If target point is in the air, Dynamo will be moved to the exact spot while other heroes retain their relative positions.
    • If the line of sight between the target location and the teammate's new position would be broken after teleporting, Quantum Entanglement will bring the ally to the target location instead. This can be used to teleport allies through walls or roofs.

  • Can be used to protect Dynamo and his teammates from powerful but telegraphed effects. For example,   Infernus'   Concussive Combustion is especially easy to nullify by using Quantum Entanglement just before the explosion.

  • Cast Range gets increased by Ability Range upgrades.
  • The 13m allied teleport distance does not get increased by Ability Range upgrades.

Backstory

See Dynamo/Lore for more story content.

As a Scientist, Professor Dynamo always had an inquisitive mind. So when a rift in space and time opened up in central park he was first on the scene to investigate – and while he expected such a majestic sight to be life changing, he was thinking more in a metaphorical way as opposed to having his body atomized and reduced to a tiny dying star.

But while his body is gone, his spirit and lust for knowledge lives on. A tenured professor at Columbia College, Dynamo looks to learn more about his condition while maintaining his class load, after all: he has future minds to inspire.

Trivia

  • Dynamo is also referred to as prof (Professor) in the game files.
  • Dynamo was named Sumo in Neon Prime, and later renamed to Jeong. He was renamed to Dynamo still during Neon Prime.
  • Dynamo is voiced by John Patrick Lowrie,[1] who is known for voicework in other popular Valve titles (e.g. Sniper in Team Fortress 2, Pudge in Dota 2.)
    • In The Binding of Oathkeeper, Dynamo was voiced by Fred Tatasciore, as John wasn't available for recording. These voice lines have since been re-recorded with John.[3]
    • Some of Dynamo's voice lines were based on conversations between John and Deadlock writer Steve Jaros about quantum physics.[4]
  • The name of Dynamo's weapon, the Vonnegun, is an homage to American author Kurt Vonnegut. Ironically, Vonnegut was famously a pacifist and claimed that a virtuous scientist was one who refused to develop weapons.[5]
    • This may also be a reference to Vonnegut's short story Report on the Barnhouse Effect, about a professor who develops the power of telekinesis and calls it "dynamopsychism".
  • When casting Quantum Entanglement, a crest of the sun with a planetary body orbiting around it appears as a destination marker. The crest is styled after Renaissance depictions of the sun, as it sports a hatched style and a serene face.
  • In a concept artwork and in The Binding of Oathkeeper, Dynamo had a different design in which his head had a different shape and was attached to his body, and he wore gloves.
  • One of Dynamo's early concept designs was a paranormal pizza delivery guy called Lil' Dynamo.[6]
  • "Pontificating in the Hideout" is displayed as one's status in the in-game Friends List when playing as Dynamo in the Hideout.
