As a Scientist, Professor Dynamo always had an inquisitive mind. So when a rift in space and time opened up in central park he was first on the scene to investigate – and while he expected such a majestic sight to be life changing, he was thinking more in a metaphorical way as opposed to having his body atomized and reduced to a tiny dying star.
But while his body is gone, his spirit and lust for knowledge lives on. A tenured professor at Columbia College, Dynamo looks to learn more about his condition while maintaining his class load, after all: he has future minds to inspire.

Overview
editDynamo's wish and motivation in the ritual is to get his human body back.[1][2][3]
Biography
editDynamo's youth as an undergraduate student involved a lot of fist fights.[4][5][6]
Dynamo lost his body 50 years before the ritual, during the first Maelstrom.[7][8] He married Marla 19 years later,[9] although they seemed to know each other when Dynamo was still human.[10]
Dynamo has not touched an Astral Gate since his body was transformed,[11] although he has done a lot of research into Astral Gates.[12] Dynamo had an exculsive interview with the New York Oracle about his thoughts on Astral Gates, the Eclipse, and life without a body.[13]
Dynamo is known amongst students to be a good teacher.[14][15][16] Dynamo looks out for his students' wellbeing and has papers to grade at the time of the ritual.[17][18] Outside of his work as a professor, Dynamo works at a soup kitchen during the Winter season.[19] He also built and designed his own gun, the "Vonnegun".[20]
Dynamo has "vast" connections in science and academia. In The Binding of Oathkeeper, Lady Geist asks Dynamo to arrange a gala for the "brightest minds" to help with her failing ward.[21]
Personality
editDynamo is inquisitive and optimistic. Most characters are apologetic when fighting Dynamo.[22]
Dynamo generally prefers working with people as opposed to lying to them, which is why he doesn't enjoy games like Poker.[23] Dynamo is apologetic when hurting people in the ritual,[24][25] and supposedly has a "temper" that he doesn't like to show.[26][27] However, Dynamo does get excited when he does well at killing people.[28][29]
As someone with an inquisitive mind, Dynamo is excited to see what happens when the Patrons get summoned.[30] While nervous,[31] Dynamo believes he needs to be firm and courageous enough to fight with his team.[32][33][34] In a Winter season voice line, Dynamo says he didn't sleep the night before the Maelstrom because he was "afraid of death".[35]
Dynamo doesn't like his condition as a dying star and believed it to be a curse.[36][37] That said, Dynamo considers his body to be "splendid, all things considered".[38]
Dynamo likes to go to the New York Library to think.[39] He hopes to visit South Ixia someday.[40]
Dynamo isn't a fan of the Occult Industrial Complex,[41] and appreciates the work of the Baxter Society.[42]
Appearance
editDynamo has a spherical blue metallic body with modeled chest pecs, and layers of concentric circles ending in a "belly button", which can open to reveal the black hole inside during Singularity. He has robotic limbs with floating hands and feet, and a floating half pill-shaped glass head with small round glasses, round ears, and a hole in the back. Inside his head is a floating star pattern surrounded by darkness. He wears a brown plaid tweed jacket with elbow pads, yellow pants with a brown belt, brown shoes, and a green bowtie. He has a golden wedding ring in his left hand, an orange, black and white pin in his lapel, a round metal plate in his belt, and carries a large bag with blueprints, books, and a letter from the OSIC. His weapon is a bespoke handgun designed by himself[20] and made of metal, wood, glass and exposed wires, that shoots bolts of energy.
Information
editThe name of Dynamo's weapon, the Vonnegun, is an homage to American author Kurt Vonnegut. Ironically, Vonnegut was famously a pacifist and claimed that a virtuous scientist was one who refused to develop weapons.[43]
When casting Quantum Entanglement, a crest of the sun with a planetary body orbiting around it appears as a destination marker. The crest is styled after Renaissance depictions of the sun, as it sports a hatched style and a serene face.
Character Relationships
editMarla is Dynamo's wife.[44] They have been married for 31 years.[9]
It's implied that Dynamo mainly wants to get his human body back for Marla's sake.[45][46] The first thing Dynamo intends to do once he gets his body back is to "give Marla a hug and not let go for about 3 months".[47]
Marla bakes Dynamo key lime pies, even though he can't eat them.[48] She made him a key lime pie to share with his team after he completes the ritual.[49]
Dynamo and Marla have visited the Paradox Museum together.[50]
During the winter season, Dynamo and Marla go carolling together.[51]
Dynamo is Pocket's godfather. He recognizes Pocket and says he would have helped them if he knew they were alive. Pocket didn't tell Dynamo that they survived because they weren't sure if they could trust him.[52][53]
Dynamo used to be friends with Maximilian Fairfax. Dynamo believes Fairfax has "warm nostalgia" for him and considers Fairfax a "complicated man" as opposed to a bad man.[54]
Ivy's sister, Sophia Arroyo, is studying at Columbia under Dynamo.[55]
Sophia speaks highly of Dynamo,[56][14] and Dynamo thinks she's a great student, although Dynamo does notice that Sophia has been sleeping in class and asks Ivy if she could speak to Sophia about it.[57] Dynamo doesn't know that Sophia works for Wraith, although it's implied that he knows Sophia frequents Wraith's casino and warns Wraith not to take advantage of his students.[17]
Ivy worries her fighting Dynamo during the ritual would preconceive him against Sophia.[58] Dynamo reaffirms Ivy that Sophia's grades won't be affected by Ivy's actions in the ritual.[59]
Dynamo and Kelvin are friends. They last saw each other at the Black Château, before Kelvin disappeared.[60]
Dynamo is a fan of Kelvin's books.[61]
Dynamo sometimes refers to Kelvin as "Kevin".[62]
Character Interactions
edit- Dynamo's lust for knowledge leads him to ask questions about other characters, such as how Seven survived his execution,[63] how Paradox's time manipulation works,[64] what the Djinn are like,[65] what the contents of Abrams' Tome and Pocket's case could be,[66][67] what Viscous is,[68] and if Yamato's sword is an heirloom.[69]
- Dynamo showcases courage by telling Abrams,[33] Shiv[70] and Warden[34] that he'll stay close to them during the fight.
- Dynamo defends his wife's honor from Lash's insults.[71]
- Dynamo asks Infernus to help him pick a hat at a haberdashery.[72]
- Dynamo relates to Bebop due to them both having robotic bodies.[73]
- Haze tells Dynamo that OSIC agent Marlowe has an offer for Dynamo to join them. Dynamo declines, claiming to be happy in the "Private sector". Dynamo mistakes Marlowe for his wife, Marla.[74]
- McGinnis offers to upgrade Dynamo's body, although Dynamo declines as he intends to get his human body back after the ritual.[75]
- While on the same team, Drifter threatens to kill Marla if Dynamo fails the ritual.[76]
- Grey Talon respects Dynamo's courage for enduring his body being torn apart and wishes he had the same optimism Dynamo has.[77]
- Vindicta wants to speak to Dynamo if they fail the ritual, due to John Hathorne planning to give a speech at Columbia College.[78]
- Mirage asks Dynamo if he can give him and Nashala a tour of Columbia College.[79]
- Seven is a fan of Dynamo's research into Astral Gates and holds him in high regard.[80][81]
- Lady Geist and Mina dislike Dynamo's jacket.[82][83] Graves thinks the jacket is cool.[84]
- Celeste appreciates being on the same team as Dynamo, as she thinks they're both "well-adjusted people".[85] While on opposing teams, Celeste wishes she could help Dynamo get his body back.[86]
- Rem says Dynamo smells like banana bread.[87] Vyper says Dynamo smells like key lime pie.[48]
The Binding of Oathkeeper
edit- Main article: The Binding of Oathkeeper
Dynamo makes an appearance in Lady Geist's visual novel, The Binding of Oathkeeper.
Note: The Binding of Oathkeeper is currently inaccessible to the main game, instead being something planned for release in the future. As such, everything in the current visual novel is prone to change, as it is still undergoing development.
Dynamo plays an important role in chapters 2a and 3a.
Upon discovering that her ward containing Oathkeeper was failing, Lady Geist needed to find someone who could tell her more about wards. Her grandson, Johann Geist Jr., got her in contact with Dynamo to ask him about wards.
Meeting with Dynamo at one of his classrooms, Lady Geist introduces herself. Dynamo initailly tries to make small talk with Lady Geist as she's a "kindred spirit" before she shuts him down. Lady Geist tells Dynamo that her ward is failing, and while Dynamo's knowledge of wards is "journeyman at best", Lady Geist notes that Dynamo's "connections with science and academia are vast". She asks him to gather the brightest minds he can find to attend a gala in two weeks to see if anyone could help her with her ward. Dynamo initially thinks it's impossible to get everyone in just two weeks, but Lady Geist offering a quarter-million dollars for each person in attendance changes his mind, promising to get Lady Geist a list of names soon.
Two weeks later, the gala is hosted as Dynamo introduces Lady Geist to a few people he could get for the event. Lady Geist asks for some fresh air as none of the people inside are able to help her. While Lady Geist is outside talking to McGinnis, who Dynamo likely would have invited to the gala, Dynamo is met by Abrams. Abrams tells Dynamo that he's a friend of Lady Geist's, and asks him to give her his business card so she can get in contact with him. Dynamo finds Lady Geist outside and gives her the business card.
Dynamo does not appear again in The Binding of Oathkeeper. Novel-specific conversations with Abrams has Dynamo tease him about moving into Lady Geist's apartment, joking about it being a "star-crossed romance".[88]
Removed Lore
editDynamo originally had unused monologue lines that seemed be planned for something unrelated to the ritual. In these lines, Dynamo references himself and Maximilian Fairfax being in a group called "the squid boys". These lines have since been removed, but are available on Dynamo's quotes page.[89]
Removed character interactions
editNeon Prime - Sumo
editDynamo was named Sumo in Neon Prime, and later renamed to Jeong. He was renamed to Dynamo still during Neon Prime.
Dynamo was a "really good guy" and a kid.[91][92] He was also mentioned to be a line cook.[93][94]
There was also an unused concept for Dynamo depicting him as a pizza delivery driver.
