The gargoyle didn't know what was happening when it sprang to life... just that a big human and a small human were being hurt. And so the gargoyle leapt to action, sending the attackers fleeing in horror. The small human said thank you and asked the gargoyle's name. The gargoyle didn't have one. And so the small human said, "I'm going to call you Ivy." The gargoyle, being covered in ivy at the time, thought it was a bit obvious, but decided to go along with it for the small human's sake.
The humans asked if Ivy would come home with them so they could show their appreciation, and so Ivy walked with them. That night she learned much. The family were called The Arroyo's. The little one, Sophia. Mofongo is what they called a plate of deliciousness. But most importantly, she learned that the people attacking them were called "The Mendoza Syndicate", and they were hurting people...nice people like The Arroyo's.
18 years have passed since the day the Arroyo's took Ivy home... and during that time she made it her mission to dismantle the Mendoza Syndicate and free Spanish Harlem from its grasp. However the thing about dedicating your life to a single pursuit for nearly 2 decades is that you don't really know what to do once you achieve it. For the first time in her life, Ivy is prepared to venture outside of Spanish Harlem and see what the world has to offer beyond vigilante justice.
Overview
Ivy has a few motivations for being in the ritual. She wants to keep Spanish Harlem safe,[1] make life better for the Arroyos,[2][3] find her new purpose in life now that the Mendoza Syndicate has been dismantled,[4][5] help Carlos Arroyo secure his place as New York's mayor,[6][7] and (if she finds out about Sophia's job as Wraith's bookmaker)[8][9] keep Sophia out of trouble.[10]
Biography
Ivy has been alive for 20 years.[11] She is a gargoyle, and was made of stone before she came to life,[12] being able to transform back into stone during Stone Form.[13] Ivy seems to have a digestive system as she can eat mofongo.[14] It's currently unknown how Ivy came to life.
It took Ivy 18 years to dismantle the Mendoza Syndicate.[15] Ivy managed to take down the syndicate "without murdering everybody",[16] and let Mendoza himself live after he said he'd leave New York.[17][18] Ivy used to buy powerful items from the
Shopkeeper during her offense against the Mendoza Syndicate.[19] After successfully dismantling the Mendoza Syndicate, Ivy was famously known as "the Savior of Spanish Harlem",[20][21] with news of her efforts reaching across the United States due to public interest.[22]
With Mendoza gone, Ivy had completed her purpose as a vigilante and is now looking for a career.[23][4][24] She's also just recently started to leave Spanish Harlem.[15][25] Ivy's visual novel will show Ivy's efforts to get a job and support the Arroyos.
Ivy is implied to be Catholic.[26][27]
Personality
Ivy is kind, friendly and noble. She cares about people and just wants to help them.[28] Ivy feels a personal obligation to get a job to support the Arroyos even though she knows they'd never charge her rent.[29] Most characters like Ivy and are apologetic when fighting her.[30] While kind, Ivy doesn't hate violence, and does enjoy punching criminals.[31] Ivy wants to have a hug whenever she's sad.[32][33]
Ivy dislikes being called the "Savior of Spanish Harlem" as she just wanted to make her neighborhood safe.[34] She also dislikes organized crime due to her history with Mendoza,[35][36] and doesn't understand why characters like Bebop and Mo & Krill do bad things for money.[37][38] Ivy prefers to fight crime without resorting to murder.[16]
Ivy's hobbies (that don't involve violence) include people-watching, plants, and flying around New York.[24][39][40][41] Ivy loves New York and considers it the greatest city in the world.[42] As she has only recently started leaving Spanish Harlem, Ivy is looking forward to sightseeing.[25] She wants to watch South Pacific.[43]
Ivy doesn't care about who made her or how she came to life as, in her eyes, her life started when she met the Arroyos, and anything before that doesn't matter to her.[44] Ivy doesn't enjoy using Stone Form as she dislikes being a statue.[45][46]
Appearance
Ivy is a short and slender gargoyle with a beige-skinned androgynous body, a pair of large wings in her back, a reptile-like face with big green-yellow eyes with vertical slit pupils, short black hair with bangs on the sides, tall ears, and a joyful smile with two big teeth in her lower mouth. Her back is hunched, making her look shorter than she really is. She has 4-fingered hands, digitigrade feet with 2 toes, and a long tail with stone spikes at the end. She wears wine-red pants with suspenders and a newsboy cap with holes for her two small horns. She has a nose ring, stone bracelets in her hands and feet, vines covering her hands and arms in the shape of gloves, and the Roman numeral "IV" carved on her back. Her weapon is similar to a German MP 18 submachine gun, with two side cartridges in a crossbow shape, and covered in vines.
Ivy sits in a squat during Stone Form, presumably in the pose she had before she came to life.
Character Relationships
The Arroyos are Ivy's adoptive family. Ivy loves the Arroyos and thinks they're an amazing family.[42] She is also reluctant to leave the Arroyos on their own for too long,[47][48] likely due to the fear of them being hurt while she's away.[49][50][51] Like Ivy, the Arroyos are implied to be Catholic.[27]
Carlos Arroyo, Ivy's adoptive father, is a first-grade schoolteacher[52] running an election campaign for mayor of New York,[53] and Ivy is supporting him as "she believes in Carlos".[54][7] Ivy idolises Carlos and often asks herself what he would do in her situation.[55][56] Carlos tells Ivy that "it takes more muscles to frown than to smile" and "you can make opportunities, but you can't make people take them".[52][57] Carlos' wife is named Maria.[58]
Sophia Arroyo (or Sophie) is Ivy's sister who recently started to study at Columbia College under Dynamo.[29][59][60] Unbeknownst to Ivy, Sophia works for Wraith as her bookmaker to pay for her tuition.[8][9] One of Ivy's potential motives in participating in the ritual is to keep Sophia safe.[10] Sophia was the Arroyo who named Ivy.[11] In one of the storylines in Ivy's Visual Novel, Ivy finds out that Sophia is working for Wraith.[9]
Manny Arroyo is Ivy's little brother who Ivy takes to Paige's story time.[61] The Arroyos enjoy it when Ivy flies them around the city,[62] and Ivy believes her siblings would love to watch her win in the ritual.[63]
Mendoza is the leader of the Mendoza Syndicate. After 18 years of vigilante justice, Ivy succeeded in her mission to dismantle the criminal empire and force Mendoza to leave Spanish Harlem.[17] While Mendoza told Ivy that he'd leave New York, he still operates in secret somewhere in the city.[18]
According to Lash, Ivy is the person Mendoza hates the most in New York.[64] Yamato mentions that Mendoza also fears Ivy.[65]
Ivy seems to be afraid that Mendoza will come after the Arroyos in order to hurt her.[49][51]
Ivy's sister, Sophia Arroyo, is studying at Columbia under Dynamo.[66]
Sophia speaks highly of Dynamo to Ivy,[67][68] and Dynamo thinks she's a great student, although Dynamo does notice that Sophia has been sleeping in class and asks Ivy if she could speak to Sophia about it.[60] Dynamo doesn't know that Sophia works for Wraith, although it's implied that he knows Sophia frequents Wraith's casino and warns Wraith not to take advantage of his students.[69]
Dynamo offers to give Ivy a reference to help her with her job searching.[23]
Ivy worries her fighting Dynamo during the ritual would preconceive him against Sophia.[70] Dynamo reaffirms Ivy that Sophia's grades won't be affected by Ivy's actions in the ritual.[71]
Ivy knows Paige from Manny Arroyo's story time.[61] She likes Paige and wants to start a book club with her.[72][73]
Vyper used to work for Mendoza, and was caught by Ivy in the past.[74][75][76] Vyper knows that Sophia is working for Wraith, but doesn't want to get involved in "family drama" unless there's a will involved.[8] Vyper is envious of Ivy's nickname.[77]
Character Interactions
- Ivy is naturally distrustful towards other criminals, especially Wraith and Yamato,[78] who are both leaders of their own criminal organizations. Ivy tells Wraith to stay out of Spanish Harlem after seeing her in the area.[36]
- Ivy invites
Bebop and Ms. Shelly over to visit the Arroyos.[81] - Ivy expresses admiration for Shiv and calls him a "shampoo ad with knives".[82][83]
- Ivy asks Kelvin if he could talk to Manny Arroyo as he's a big fan of Kelvin's stories.[84]
- Ivy asks Holliday if she wanted to go sightseeing together.[25]
- Ivy attempts to ask Victor out to dinner.[85] While on opposing teams, Ivy offers to help Victor with his problems after the ritual.[86]
- Lash likes Ivy due to Mendoza's hatred towards both of them.[87][64] In one of the storylines in Ivy's Visual Novel, Lash helps Ivy go after Mendoza.
Billy believes that Ivy is a stooge who was used by Carlos Arroyo to become mayor.[54][88]
Haze appreciates what Ivy did for New York, but believes she wouldn't be a good OSIC agent due to her big heart.[89][90]
Seven respects Ivy for fighting for her ideals.[91]
Apollo respects Ivy but believes she shouldn't have saved Spanish Harlem, instead believing that they should've saved themselves rather than rely solely on Ivy.[92][93]
Vindicta believes Ivy is naive and warns her that, if she doesn't smarten up soon, someone she cares about will be hurt.[16]
Warden respects Ivy,[94] but he also believes she's "meddling in things she doesn't understand".[95]
The Doorman tells Ivy that one of the Arroyos will die in five years and there's nothing she can do to stop it. However, it's unknown if he can really see the future or is just playing with her fears.[50]
Ivy's Visual Novel
- Main article: Ivy's Visual Novel
Ivy stars in her own visual novel, currently untitled. Below is a brief summary of the existing chapters.
Note: Ivy's Visual Novel is currently inaccessible to the main game, instead being something planned for release in the future. As such, everything in the current visual novel is prone to change, as it is still undergoing development.
Additionally, several chapters and lines in Ivy's visual novel are missing. The summary below is an analysis of what lines and chapters are currently accessible.
Chapter 1
The visual novel begins with Ivy meeting a job recruiter. Ivy explains that, for the past 20 years, she was so focused on fighting Mendoza that she didn't know what she was going to do when she actually beat him, so now she seeks a job to help support the Arroyos. While her skills and hobbies "that don't involve violence" are scarce, Ivy tells the interviewer that she cares about people a lot, and just wants to help. The job recruiter gives Ivy two options: working at a diner as a waitress, or working as a process server. Ivy can also decide to go home to think her choices over.
Ivy decides to try being a waitress. She initially struggles at the diner as she mixes up orders, has to deal with rude customers, and faces discrimination as a gargoyle.
In Storyline B, Ivy endures the shift and returns home to the Arroyos, where she vents about how awfully people at the diner treated her and that "the mob literally tried to kill her and she didn't care this much". The chapter ends with Ivy agreeing to something Carlos Arroyo said. The rest of storyline B is unknown, but there are two chapters left.
In Storyline A, Ivy caves in to the verbal abuse and throws a man through a window, resulting in Ivy getting fired. A man, who Ivy originally thought to be unfun, commends Ivy's "talent" for throwing someone through a window and seems to offer her a job as a bodyguard for Cadence. Ivy accepts the deal.
Ivy arrives at Cadence's club where she is currently performing. The man who hired Ivy, named "Archie", introduces her to Cadence. While Cadence is reluctant to take Ivy on, Archie seems to ask Ivy for a demonstration. While it's unknown what Ivy does here, Cadence notes that Ivy "made things worse", to which Ivy retorts "If you don't stand up to bullies, that's what makes things worse", promising to help fix anything that gets broken "tonight".
Chapter 5 in storyline A is titled as "The Concert", with the description "Cadence's concert doesn't go as planned". This chapter has no voice lines, but there are 82 pages and a choice to "Take Cadence's Offer". As taking Cadence's offer is a choice, there is likely another pathway in this chapter.
Ivy decides to take up a job as a process server. Ivy is initially confused as to why, as a process server, she just has to give the "criminals" court summons instead of just punching them, noting that "the law seems pretty stupid". A lawyer gives Ivy two choices to give court summons: Wraith or Lash.
In Storyline D, Ivy decides to give Wraith her court summons. Arriving at Wraith's "totally normal backroom" at a tailor shop, Ivy is shocked to see her sister, Sophia Arroyo, working with Wraith. Sophia's lines are missing, but Ivy presses Sophia about her working for Wraith, which seems to be to fund her college tuition. Wraith defends Sophia, saying that she's "financing a smart girl's dreams of higher education". Ivy tells Sophia that she's taking her home. The rest of Storyline D is unknown, but there are 2 chapters left and (seemingly) no more choices in this pathway.
In Storyline E, Ivy decides to give Lash his court summons. Finding Lash "on an I-beam", Ivy tells Lash that there were a group of people "down below" who were searching for him. Lash tells Ivy that that's why he's up there. Ivy offers to scare off the group, to which Lash tells her that he isn't running from a fight, he's just deciding "whose teeth he's gonna kick in first". Lash descends to the group, with Ivy right behind him.
Lash and Ivy meet with the group of thugs. While the thug's lines are missing, one of them mentions Mendoza's name, which Ivy picks up on. A fight breaks out where Ivy and Lash work together to beat up the thugs. Ivy is shocked that Mendoza is still in New York after he said he would leave, and asks Lash if he could take her to him, to which Lash agrees.
Chapter 5 in storyline E is missing, and there are no clues as to what happens in this chapter.
Ivy decides to go home to think her choices over. Once home, Carlos Arroyo calls for a family meeting. While the details of the meeting are unknown (as only Ivy has voice lines), Carlos seems to announce that he's running for mayor. Ivy offers to help him.
Ivy begins canvassing for Carlos Arroyo in the streets of New York, trying to get people to learn why he should be New York's next mayor. Somebody greets Ivy and, while their lines are missing, seems to convince her to try participating in the ritual to help Carlos. The rest of Storyline F is unknown, but there are two chapters left.
Removed Lore

Ivy's gun was originally called Cat Dad's Fancy.
Ivy has some references to her flesh being made of stone.[96][97] While these lines still exist in-game, they contrast other lines that suggest her flesh used to be made out of stone.[12][13]
Neon Prime - Tengu
Ivy was named Tengu in Neon Prime. This character wore a Japanese Tengu mask.
