This section contains spoilers for The Binding of Oathkeeper.

Lady Jeanne Geist (married name) was born in France, in 1815. She married German artist Johann Geist. Jeanne and Johann had a son named Walter in 1850, and Johann died in 1880.

* The self damage is Spirit, can be mitigated, and is not lethal. Self damage is calculated at 30% of the damage that the player would deal.
* Touching an enemy unit while in flight starts the explosion delay timer early.

Circa 1899, when Jeanne was around 84 years old, the first Maelstrom happened, bringing various supernatural forces to Earth, and the spirit Oathkeeper was one of them. Jeanne made a pact with Oathkeeper to regain her youth in exchange for draining the life of others. She was initially reluctant, but accepted the deal. However, with the help of Walter, she made a ward to keep Oathkeeper under control. As the ward was "against the spirit of the deal," Oathkeeper promised to make Jeanne suffer if he ever broke free.
}}

Walter had a son whom he named after his father, Johann "Jr." Johann Jr. became a doctor, and after Walter died, he did the maintenance of his grandmother's ward. Jeanne and Walter had "a terrible sense of humor", according to Johann Jr.

* Life Drain's -Life Drain% move speed reduction only applies while the target is being damaged.
* When Alternate casting, Spirit self-damage is dealt equal to the base DPS of Life Drain. This damage is not lethal and can be mitigated by Spirit Resist items.
** The health given to a teammate is equal to the ability's base DPS, independent from the self-damage, and is affected by Healing Effectiveness modifiers.
* The Alternate Cast can be used on a friendly hero that has full health, but Geist will not take self-damage unless health is being "transferred".
* Life Drain's tether stays attached to a target even when out of line of sight or beyond its Life Drainm Max Range.
| tips        =
* Because Life Drain stays attached while out of line of sight, the position of tethered victims can be tracked if they move for cover.

Now, 50 years after her initial pact and on the eve of the second Maelstrom, Geist has to decide how she'll deal with Oathkeeper, and whether she'll continue to kill others to stay young or accept her natural aging and eventual death.

While her exact motivations change depending on what path she takes in The Binding of Oathkeeper, Lady Geist's main goal in the ritual is to prevent Oathkeeper from breaking free and killing her.<ref>'s in-game voice line (Lady Geist start): "Time is running out, Lady Geist. * Soul Exchange  deals Pure Damage, and thus does not proc items such as Mystic Reverb, and is not affected by anti-healing or Damage Resistance.
* Soul Exchange has a Soul Exchanges cast time before swapping and can be stopped by some items and abilities, such as a well timed Counterspell.
* Has a hidden Soul Exchange% slow that gets applied to the target upon cast and lasts for Soul Exchanges.
* Unlocking T3 upgrade will change the damage value of Lady Geist's other abilities, as if the bonus Spirit Power on cast is always active. This is a bug, the actual damage is unchanged.
* Soul Exchange's mechanics work as follows:
** Once Soul Exchange is successfully cast, the target loses 0.3 of their current HP%. This new HP% (Enemy HP% * 0.7) is then compared with Geist's current HP%.
*** If (Enemy HP% * 0.7) > (Geist HP%), the health percentages between Geist and the target enemy are directly swapped.
*** If (Enemy HP% * 0.7) < (Geist HP%), then 30% of the enemy's current remaining health is removed. Then, Geist receives health equal to the enemy's max health lost.
**** I.e.: Lady Geist and her target are both at 80% HP, and she casts Soul Exchange. The target loses 30% of their current health bar (80% --> 56% HP, 24% max HP lost). Lady Geist receives 24% of her max HP (80%+24%), leaving her at 100% health.
** If the enemy would lose enough health to go below 30% of their max HP, it is instead set to 30%.
*** If the enemy was already at less than 30% of their max HP, they don't lose any HP, but Geist receives the health that the enemy would have normally lost.

The lives of the weak are meant to sustain the lives of the strong.

Lady Geist is a Hero in Deadlock. A socialite with a necromantic pact, Lady Geist consumes her own health for her abilities while draining the life away from opponents. Sacrificing her life force to launch Essence Bombs and blood shards filled with Malice, Lady Geist can regain lost health with Life Drain, sapping enemy heroes and units of their health. Her Soul Exchange swaps health values with an enemy hero, turning the odds against them for a killing blow.

The Toast of the Town, Lady Jeanne Geist was famed by all and invited to every ball and gala in the city... until her beauty faded in her old age and left her with only memories and stories of her glory. In desperation, she formed a pact with a powerful spirit and bound it by powerful wards until she was safe and young again. All she needs to do now is feed on the life force of her fellows to maintain her beauty... and hope desperately that the Oathkeeper will stay bound.

  • Life Drain's -40% move speed reduction only applies while the target is being damaged.
  • When Alternate casting, Spirit self-damage is dealt equal to the base DPS of Life Drain. This damage is not lethal and can be mitigated by Spirit Resist items.
    • The health given to a teammate is equal to the ability's base DPS, independent from the self-damage, and is affected by Healing Effectiveness modifiers.
  • The Alternate Cast can be used on a friendly hero that has full health, but Geist will not take self-damage unless health is being "transferred".
  • Life Drain's tether stays attached to a target even when out of line of sight or beyond its 28m Max Range.

  • Because Life Drain stays attached while out of line of sight, the position of tethered victims can be tracked if they move for cover.

  • Soul Exchange deals Pure Damage, and thus does not proc items such as Mystic Reverb, and is not affected by anti-healing or Damage Resistance.
  • Soul Exchange has a 0.1s cast time before swapping and can be stopped by some items and abilities, such as a well timed Counterspell.
  • Has a hidden 70% slow that gets applied to the target upon cast and lasts for 0.25s.
  • Unlocking T3 upgrade will change the damage value of Lady Geist's other abilities, as if the bonus Spirit Power on cast is always active. This is a bug, the actual damage is unchanged.
  • Soul Exchange's mechanics work as follows:
    • Once Soul Exchange is successfully cast, the target loses 0.3 of their current HP%. This new HP% (Enemy HP% * 0.7) is then compared with Geist's current HP%.
      • If (Enemy HP% * 0.7) > (Geist HP%), the health percentages between Geist and the target enemy are directly swapped.
      • If (Enemy HP% * 0.7) < (Geist HP%), then 30% of the enemy's current remaining health is removed. Then, Geist receives health equal to the enemy's max health lost.
        • I.e.: Lady Geist and her target are both at 80% HP, and she casts Soul Exchange. The target loses 30% of their current health bar (80% --> 56% HP, 24% max HP lost). Lady Geist receives 24% of her max HP (80%+24%), leaving her at 100% health.
    • If the enemy would lose enough health to go below 30% of their max HP, it is instead set to 30%.
      • If the enemy was already at less than 30% of their max HP, they don't lose any HP, but Geist receives the health that the enemy would have normally lost.

Backstory

[edit | edit source]

See Lady Geist/Lore for more story content.

Once, Lady Jeanne Geist was the toast of the town. But as time passed and her beauty faded she found herself further and further from her glory days in High Society until finally she was nothing more than a frail woman in a nursing home, telling stories of a glorious past. And that’s when Oathkeeper revealed himself. A powerful spirit from another plane, Oathkeeper offered her a path to reclaim her past glories… he could restore her youth; all she had to do was drain the essence of the living to sustain herself.

Geist was torn. Obviously murder was ghoulish business, and undoubtedly Oathkeeper was not an entity that could be trusted… but still, the thought of having a second chance of reliving her youth was too good to pass up. And so she concocted a plan: after making a pact with Oathkeeper she would bind and ward him, limiting his influence and pull over her. Oathkeeper would still get fed; but on her terms, not his.

However, as years have turned to decades; the strength of the Ward has weakened, and Oathkeeper hungers more than he ever has in the past…

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Geist is a German word that can be translated as "spirit/mind".
  • Lady Geist is French, but she uses her late German husband's last name.
  • Lady Geist is referred to as "Oma" (German: grandma) by her grandson Johann Jr.
  • Alongside Mina, Lady Geist is one of the few heroes to holds her gun in the left hand, as Oathkeeper is in her right arm in-game. However, in a concept art and in The Binding of Oathkeeper artwork, Oathkeeper is in her left arm.
  • Lady Geist was named Spectre in Neon Prime, and later renamed to Ghost.
  • Before Lady Geist's model was updated, there were two work-in-progress models in the files labeled Ghost_test and Ghost_v2.
  • Lady Geist's idle animation has a similar angle and pose as the drawing My Wife and My Mother-in-Law by W. E. Hill, which displays an optical illusion of a young woman and an old woman at the same time.
  • Lady Geist's hairstyle in The Binding of Oathkeeper resembles that of Madeline Ashton, a character played by Meryl Streep in the 1992 movie Death Becomes Her, who similarly uses magic to stay young. The visual novel's cover also references the movie's opening scene, in which Madeline sits in front of a mirror wearing a teal dress and gloves.
  • "Being Fabulous in the Hideout" is displayed as one's status in the in-game Friends List when playing as Lady Geist in the Hideout.
  • Lady Geist was referenced in the videogame Skullgirls Mobile as a variant of the character Black Dahlia.
  • When targeting abilities on Lady Geist, the reticle focuses on Oathkeeper instead of Geist's center of mass. This also applies to status effect indicators, such as Stalker's Mark or Djinn's Mark.
