If you think crime doesn't pay, you are outrageously bad at crime.

The cornerstone of the New York gambling scene, Wraith's organization is about as open a secret as it comes. However, thanks to a non-trivial amount of bribes, shakedowns, and blackmail, Wraith knows that she's above the law.

Overview

Wraith's motivation for being in the ritual isn't clear, but it seems to be for a chance to get more wealth, popularity and power.[1][2][3] Wraith mentions that she wants to keep her wish as simple as possible to avoid loopholes.[4]

Biography

Wraith owns a casino, which acts as her main base of operations.[5][6] As part of her business, Wraith lets customers take out markers from her. Her plan usually involves gambling with people until they owe her money, which forces them to take out markers (loans).[7] Wraith claims to have built her criminal organisation herself, rather than inheriting it.[8] Wraith's criminal organisation doesn't have a name.

Wraith has done business with the Mendoza Syndicate in the past,[9] although she dislikes Mendoza himself.[10] Wraith shows interest in working with the Seventh Moon,[11] but ultimately views them as a rival organisation.[12][13] The OSIC are aware of Wraith's business, but aren't interested in dismantling it.[6] Wraith has bribed some of the New York police to leave her business alone,[14][15] and she isn't concerned about Captain Murphy.[16]

Wraith is interested in expanding her criminal organisation and getting into contact with powerful people. She was spotted looking around Spanish Harlem by Ivy,[17] and she wants to get an introduction to Maximilian Fairfax and Apollo's father.[18][19] She also plays cards with Blackmore Academy students.[20][21]

Wraith hosts weekly underground poker games.[22][23][24] She also makes bets on fights in the Bear Pit.[25]

Personality

Wraith is charming and has no qualms with manipulating people to further her goals, which can make others distrustful of her.[7][26][17] She likes to use euphemisms to appear more friendly,[27][28] calling herself "a female entrepreneur in a male-dominated industry" and "Florence Nightingale with a gun".[29] However, she's also ruthless and will threaten people if they owe money to her or stand in her way, even those she considers friends.[30][31] She's proud of the criminal empire she's built.[32]

Wraith is a "degenerate gambler"[33] because the nerves she gets from gambling make her feel alive.[34] She often offers to make bets with her teammates.[35][36]

Wraith has a long list of people she wants dead.[37] She doesn't care about killing people,[38] although it isn't a recreational thing for her.[39]

Appearance

Wraith is a slender black woman. She always keeps her hands in her pockets and uses two mechanical arms to shoot, reload and cast abilities. She has long, straight black hair, tied in a diamond shape with a golden spade pin. Her purple eyes are covered by her black hat, which has a pink band, pink bow and feather, and a purple card. She has an open dark purple striped zoot suit over her shoulders, with pink underside and spade cufflinks, and wears a white collar shirt, purple pants with brown suspenders, brown shoes, and pink bowtie. Her weapon is a modified Thompson submachine gun, also known as a "Tommy Gun" or "Chicago Typewriter".

Character Relationships

Wraith and Infernus used to work together while Infernus was a criminal.[40] While on the same team, Wraith tries to coax Infernus back into his criminal past.[41][42]

Wraith believes Infernus' work as a bartender is "boring".[43] She also believes Infernus misses her, but he denies it.[44]

Infernus plays in Wraith's weekly poker game.[45] However, he tells Mo & Krill that he wants to stay away from Wraith out of fear of her pulling him back into crime.[46]

According to Graves, Wraith told Blackmore Academy students that play cards with her about Infernus' criminal past "with the mob".[20]

Mo & Krill play in Wraith's card game and owe money to her.[47][31] If they're on the same team, Wraith may say she called a favor to have them fighting on her side.[48] They regard each other as friends.[49][50]

Wraith employs Ivy's sister, Sophia Arroyo, to work for Wraith as an accountant to finance her college tuition.[51][52] Ivy doesn't know that Sophia works for Wraith.[53]

Wraith makes Sophia work long shifts, which makes Sophia tired and affects her academic studies.[54] In Ivy's visual novel, Ivy discovers that Sophia works for Wraith, to which Wraith tells Ivy that she's just "financing a smart girl's dreams of higher education", although Wraith's true motivations for getting Sophia to work for her are unknown.[55]

Sophia is a student of Dynamo's, and he once overheard that she was frequenting Wraith's casino. While Dynamo doesn't know that Sophia works for Wraith, he warns Wraith not to take advantage of his students or he'll take it personally.[5]

Abrams plays in Wraith's weekly poker game.[22] Wraith calls Abrams "Abe" and considers him as one of her customers.[56][57]

The Seventh Moon is rivals with Wraith's criminal organization.

Yamato views Wraith as her main hurdle towards conquering New York.[58] She also hopes to take over Wraith's business.[59]

Wraith showed interest in being friends with Yamato,[11] but ultimately sees her and the Seventh Moon as an enemy.[12][13]

While on the same team, Yamato intends to betray Wraith later.[60]

Wraith has done business with the Mendoza Syndicate in the past,[9] although she dislikes Mendoza himself.[10] It's implied Mendoza similarily doesn't like Wraith.[61]

Mendoza once told Wraith to bet money on Lash losing a fight, which Lash proceeded to win, causing Wraith to lose a lot of money.[62]

Wraith wants Vyper dead since she once robbed one of Wraith's poker rooms,[63] although Wraith is willing to let Vyper's transgressions slide if they complete the ritual together.[64]

Vyper knows Sophia Arroyo works for Wraith.[65]

The Doorman thinks Wraith is a "delight" and is grateful towards her since she's a generous tipper.[66][67] He calls her a friend.[68]

Wraith's poker players

Wraith hosts weekly poker nights on Sundays, which a few characters frequent.

Regular players at Wraith's poker games are Abrams,[22] Infernus,[23] Mo & Krill,[47] SilverSilver[69] and the ShopkeeperShopkeeper.[70][71]

Wraith's markers

Wraith's business involves getting people indebted to her by taking out markers (loans).[7]

Wraith has markers on Mo & Krill,[48] the ShopkeeperShopkeeper,[72] and a talented haberdasher named Jermaine.[73] She also has a marker on VyperVyper,[74] although Wraith doesn't let her take out markers anymore since Vyper never pays them back.[75]

Wraith also has a marker on someone named "Dutch", who seems to be a friend of CelesteCeleste as she demands Wraith forgets the marker.[76]

Character Interactions

  • Wraith shows interest in getting Bebop,[77] PocketPocket,[78] and VindictaVindicta[37] to work for her.
  • Wraith tried to figure out a way to gamble with Drifter over kills in the ritual, but ultimately conceeded as she thinks Drifter would prioritize killing people over completing the ritual.[79]
  • Ivy is distrustful of Wraith. She warns her not to approach Spanish Harlem now that the Mendoza Syndicate has been defeated.[17]
    • Wraith threatens to take over Spanish Harlem if she's fighting against Ivy.[80]
  • Lash mocks Wraith for betting on Bebop,[81] and Wraith teases Lash because he lost to Bebop "one time".[25]
  • HollidayHolliday hates Wraith and threatens to stay in New York to take down her criminal organisation.[82][83][16]
  • Lady Geist says Wraith "reeks of new money". However, she respects Wraith for her cunning and ruthlessness.[32]
  • Calico and ParadoxParadox show interest in working with Wraith.[84][85][86] Wraith and Paradox have a mutual admiration for each other.[87]
  • HazeHaze views Wraith as "a worthy target".[88]
  • BillyBilly accuses Wraith of being a "paper gangster" trying to use diplomacy to "be a mayor" instead of a crimelord.[12]

Ivy's Visual Novel

“The hell are you staring at, buddy?”
This page contains game content that is unfinished, work in progress, or unavailable in standard gameplay.
Main article: Ivy's visual novel

Wraith makes an appearance in Ivy's visual novel, currently untitled.

Note: Ivy's visual novel is currently inaccessible to the main game, instead being something planned for release in the future. As such, everything in the current visual novel is prone to change, as it is still undergoing development.

In chapter 3c, Ivy decides to take a job as a process server and is tasked with giving Wraith her court summons. Arriving at Wraith's "totally normal backroom" at a tailor shop, Ivy is shocked to see her sister, Sophia Arroyo, working with Wraith. Sophia's lines are missing, but Ivy presses Sophia about her working for Wraith, which seems to be to fund her college tuition. Wraith defends Sophia, saying that she's "financing a smart girl's dreams of higher education". Ivy tells Sophia that she's taking her home. The rest of Storyline D is unknown, but there are 2 chapters left and (seemingly) no more choices in this pathway.

Removed Lore

Wraith (Neon Prime)

Removed Patron voice lines indicate that Wraith's previous backstory involved a search for her father, who had suffered a mysterious fate.[89][90]

Wraith has had 4 iterations of different designs and voice actors since her creation.[91] One of her earlier designs was a magician. That model was reused for the Metal Skin poster and for Sinclair's character model.

Wraith's weapon was originally called Houdini's Shackles.

Removed character interactions

  • Dynamo used to have a line about playing at Wraith's weekly poker games.[92]

Neon Prime

In Neon Prime, Wraith had the same name but underwent different designs.[91] Wraith was originally referred to as a dangerous zealot.[93][94]
