Magical creaturesGive feedback
Aside from the playable characters and minor characters, there are plenty of magical creatures that exist in the world of Deadlock. Many creatures arrived when the Astral Gates opened, some evolved from regular creatures due to the large influx of magic, and some creatures were present on Earth long before the first Maelstrom.
Elaborated creatures
[edit | edit source]Djinn
[edit | edit source]The Djinn are entities that hold great power at the cost of only being able to use it in short bursts. More specifically, the Djinn can only hold a corporeal form for 48 minutes before needing to rest in a vessel. Because of this, the Djinn often hire bodyguards for transport, protection or companionship. Nashala Dion is a known Djinn.[1]
The Djinn are looking for a place to call home, and Nashala has embarked on a diplomatic mission to purchase part of Wyoming from the US so the Djinn can build a nation for themselves.[1][2] The Djinn chose Wyoming due to it being the "most sensible" place for them to built a new home.[3] Mirage mentions that the Djinn can offer money and power in order to buy that piece of Wyoming.[4] Mirage himself is fighting in the ritual with Nashala to help secure Wyoming for the Djinn,[5][6] although Mirage believes that Nashala doesn't need the wish to broker a deal.[7]
Mirage is Nashala's bodyguard during her role as an ambassador. He was approached by the Djinn directly with an offer and is grateful to be of service to the Djinn despite the dangers of his position.[8] Mirage views the Djinn as "people", where some of them are fascinating while others can be as "cruel as a child".[9] Despite some of the Djinn's flaws, Mirage is dedicated to their cause and is willing to die and kill for Nashala.[10][11] Some characters during the ritual empathise with the Djinn's plight and wish Mirage luck.[12]
Each of Mirage's abilities are possible because of the Djinn.[13][14][15][16]
Lycanthropes
[edit | edit source]
Silver is a known lycanthrope, specifically a werewolf. She claims to have control over her lycanthropy,[17] although it's shown in-game that she actually can't control the transformation.[18] Silver has wolf ears and a tail in her human form, and it's currently unknown if this is common amongst werewolves. There is a headline in the New York Oracle about looking out for signs of Lycanthropy in your neighbours.[19]
On top of the wolf ears and tail, Silver also has a heightened sense of smell in her human form.[20][21]
According to Silver, wereotters exist.[22]
Werewolf meat is currently a popular cuisine in France, causing controversy in New York over whether or not it's cannibalism.[23]
Mole men
[edit | edit source]Mole men were created by the influx of magic from the first Maelstrom, evolving from regular moles into mole men. A portrait of mole men's evolution can be seen in the Hideout.
Mo is a known mole man. While Mo is mute outside of grunting during his ult, Krill implies that Maurice can speak normally.[24][25]
Mole men are known to be strong,[26][27] having the ability to dig through concrete with ease.[28]
Spirits
[edit | edit source]Unlike souls, spirits seem to be fully sentient, some being the spectral form of a deceased person. Sinclair and Vindicta are known spirits.
Some people that died a long time ago were brought back to the living realm during the first Maelstrom as ghosts, such as Vindicta. Other people, such as Sinclair (being Henry and Savanna), became spirits due to a blood pact binding their souls together, preventing them from moving on from the living realm.[29]
It's implied that not all ghosts have their own bodies, instead opting to possess people or objects. Sinclair seems to be possessing a wooden mannequin, based on sound of their footsteps. An 8-year-old concert pianist was suspected to be possessed by an 18th-century composer.[30] There was a trial regarding a botched exorcism which caused the spirit "inhuman suffering."[31]
It's implied that modern magic can be used to raise spirits from the dead.[32]
Not all spirits can interact with the living, as some graveyards are full of spirits who have unfinished business or demands left in the living world. As a necromancer,
Graves can communicate with the silent dead with the help of her lich mentor.[33] Her job involves helping give the dead peace.[34] Graves views her role as a voice for the dead and considers it an honor.[35]
Vindicta calls herself a ghost for "simplicity's sake".[36]
Unicorns
[edit | edit source]Despite magic being known worldwide, unicorns are still widely believed to be mythical, non-existent creatures.[37]
Celeste is a known unicorn.
Unicorns are implied to be extremely powerful.[38][39] Celeste is hiding her identity as a unicorn out of fear of getting poached for her horn.[37]
It's currently unknown if unicorns look human, or if they look like horses and Celeste is putting on a disguise. Celeste's model has tattoos of horseshoes and unicorns across her body. Celeste also mentions that she's "supposed to be found in the woods".[40]
Vampires
[edit | edit source]Vampires existed on Earth long before the first Maelstrom.[41] Most vampires live in their own society, known as "The Vampire Nation", which Drifter describes as a "Ponzi Scheme".[42] They follow their own laws and traditions,[43] and seem to have large amounts of power and/or influence due to the OSIC showing interest in getting favors from the Viscount of New York.[44][45] The Viscount himself is named as Simon.[46]
Known vampires include Drifter and Mina. Drifter has been a vampire for centuries,[47] while Mina has been a vampire for less than 5 years.[48]
Deadlock's vampires seem to possess similar abilities to many vampires in fiction, such as immortality/eternal youth.[49] Additionally, both Mina and Drifter express control over blood (as both use it as ammunition for their weapons). Graves also implies that vampires are undead.[50]
The older vampires, also known as "vampire elders",[51] hold their archiac titles in high regard, which Drifter considers "soft".[52]
The Vampire Nation doesn't care about human clout, as Mina is at the bottom of the vampiric social ladder despite her wealth and fame.[53][54]
Vampires seem unwilling to turn humans into vampires, as it cost Mina's parents a small fortune to find a single vampire willing to turn Mina.[55]
Vampires are a protected species in America,[56] although the Venators of the Vatican are known for hunting vampires.[57][58] The vampire elders and viscounts want Drifter dead for his refusal to follow their laws.[59]
Zephyrs
[edit | edit source]Also known as "wind spirits", zephyrs are used to power airships for public travel, although there are concerns about putting people's safety in the hands of zephyrs.[60] Holliday refuses to use airships.[61] Zephyr powered airships are used instead of aeroplanes.[62]
Mentioned creatures
[edit | edit source]Animated Objects
[edit | edit source]Objects that have attained sentience are present and numerous. The
Soul Urn is one of these and is capable of talking, smelling and hearing despite not appearing to have anything that would allow it to. The Soul Urn remarks that it has a cousin who's a shredder and an acquaintance that's a censer. There appear to be several subgroups of animated objects, such as Gargoyles (e.g. Ivy) who are statues who gained life through unknown means[63], and Golems who are "created with a mixture of craftsmanship, willpower and sacrifice".[64] Bebop [65][66] was created by Shelly Fisher[67] is a known golem, and notably appears to be capable of breathing. The Soul Urn calls itself a senior and implies that animated objects are capable of aging.
Familiars
[edit | edit source]Calico and Vindicta have familiars: Calico has her cat, Ava,[68] and Vindicta has her crow.[69] There is a cat café run by familiars "Peppermint" and "Mittens" in SoHo.[70] There is also a shelter for stray familiars in SoHo.[71]
Rem is referred to as a familiar.[72]
Liches
[edit | edit source]
Graves' weapon and mentor is a lich's hand. Despite being a severed hand, the lich is still able to communicate with Graves. The lich allows Graves to communicate with the dead and summon corpses during the ritual.[33][73] While the general nature of liches are unknown, they're implied to be untrustworthy.[74][75][76]
Loch Ness Monster
[edit | edit source]Also known as "Nessie", the Loch Ness Monster came to Earth through the Astral Gate in The Deep.[77]
Rats
[edit | edit source]While not a traditionally magical creature, the rats of New York were enhanced by the Maelstrom, causing them to become even more difficult to deal with.[78]
Undead
[edit | edit source]Similar yet different to spirits, the undead are reanimated corpses.
Kelvin,[79]
Victor[80] and potentially
Seven are undead.[81]
Yetis
[edit | edit source]There is a yeti who's part of the "Yukon Lumberjack Show," who's entertained Canadian audiences for years and are going on tour to America.[82]
