Pocket is a Hero in Deadlock. With a powerful shotgun and highly mobile abilities, they thrive in close encounters. Channelling their magic briefcase to Barrage groups of enemies with spiritual bursts, Pocket may use their sentient cloak to teleport beside their targets and unload their shotgun; disappearing inside their Enchanter's Satchel to avoid return fire. In larger groups, they can unleash an Affliction to slowly eat away at their health, setting their enemies up for a devastating attack.

The eldest heir to Fairfax Industries, Arin "Pocket" Fairfax has been in hiding for over 5 years after a failed assassination attempt. Fearing for their life and wishing to chart their own path, the newly nicknamed Pocket has been keeping their original identity secret while investigating who had tried to kill them.

Background

See Pocket/Lore for more story content.

Arin Fairfax, the eldest heir to Fairfax Industries, has been living in hiding for the past 5 years after being shot and left for dead on their 18th birthday. Arin doesn't know who is trying to keep them from taking control of their parent's company... but in the avarice fueled viper's nest that is Fairfax Industries it could be anyone.

Taking on the name "Pocket", Arin desperately wants to keep their true identity a secret… not only for their own protection; but because they want to forge their own identity separate from their parents.

Lore

Pocket's motivation in the ritual is to stop their father, Maximilian Fairfax,[12][13] and to take control of Fairfax Industries.[14][15]

Pocket believes their father was behind their attempted assasination.[16] Pocket wants to stop their father rather than kill him.[13] Maximilian seems to know that Pocket survived, as in The Binding of Oathkeeper, he asks Lady GeistLady Geist if she knows where Pocket is.[17] Pocket also does not trust their mother.[18]

Calico was the assassin hired to kill Pocket, who survived because the bullet missed their heart.[19] It's implied that Enchanter's Satchel also helped Pocket survive.[20][21] Some time after the assassination, Pocket left New York before returning to participate in the ritual.[22][23]

Pocket was betrothed to MinaMina, implied to be due to an arranged marriage.[24][25][26]

Pocket's magical suitcase, while powerful, was never meant to be used as a weapon.[27] Pocket is trying to keep their suitcase away from Maximilian.[28]

Pocket expresses regret for killing most of their enemies and say they only chose violence as a last resort.[29][30]

Pocket likely has at least one younger sibling, as their background calls them the "eldest heir" to Fairfax Industries.

A statue of Walter Fairfax, presumably an ancestor of Pocket, can be found in the garden behind the Baroness Hotel. Walter is depicted as an old man with frogs crawling over his legs. The statue also appears in Pocket's background in the hero select screen.

Pocket went to Blackmore Academy.[31]

Character interactions

  • Despite Pocket's desire to hide their true identity, the other characters seem to be aware of their background and refer to them as an "upstart",[32] a "trust fund baby"[33] and a "spoiled brat".[34]
  • Pocket loathes McGinnisMcGinnis due to her work for Fairfax Industries.[35][36][37]
  • Pocket thinks Yamato would get along with their mother.[38]
  • Pocket dislikes Wrecker and wants to dismantle Eldritch Tactical Solutions.[39][40]
  • Pocket says Vyper is more unstable than their parents.[41]
  • As the assassin hired to kill Pocket, Calico enjoys "tying up loose ends" when she kills Pocket in-game.[42] She also mentions that Maximilian Fairfax will "have questions".[43] Pocket, naturally, dislikes Calico for almost killing them.[44][45]
  • Mina hates Pocket for "ruining her life", as their assassination meant Mina couldn't become a Fairfax.[24][25][46]
  • Dynamo is Pocket's godfather. He recognizes Pocket and says he would have helped them if he knew they were alive. Pocket didn't tell Dynamo that they survived because they weren't sure if they could trust him.[47][48]
  • Lady Geist recognises Pocket, but mistakes them for a street urchin. She thinks Pocket's jacket is stolen.[49]
  • Mo & Krill protected Pocket after their assassination, and they regard each other as family.[50][51][52] They love each other.[53]
  • BebopBebop offers Pocket a place to stay after the ritual.[54]
  • GravesGraves, ParadoxParadox and YamatoYamato want Pocket's case.[55][56][57]
    • WardenWarden warns Pocket that their case will be their undoing.[58]
  • According to Rem, Pocket's clothes smell like the sewer.[59]

Trivia

  • Pocket was named Synth in Neon Prime. They were later renamed to Fairfax.
  • Pocket is voiced by Greg Chun, who also voices Shiv.[11]
  • A possible inspiration for Pocket's kit is the hero Puck from Dota 2. Besides having similar names, both Pocket and Puck have the abilities to send a slow moving projectile that damages enemies and that they can teleport to, deal AOE burst damage, and become invulnerable for a short time by going into hiding.
  • "Sulking in the Hideout" is displayed as one's status in the in-game Friends List when playing as Pocket in the Hideout.
  • Pocket's backstory and abilities have some similarities to the Biblical Plagues of Egypt: the death of the firstborn, the plague of frogs, and the pestilence (Affliction).
  • In Pocket's original model, their left hand had an eye tattoo on its back and a decayed skin tissue that glowed with the suitcase.
